Well he might as well have, with his silly stem cell ban. Nancy Regan herself came out promoting the benefist of stem cell research when it comes to alzhiemers.

But jesus freak Bush decided that its more important to haggle over unused embryo parts then to try and cure horrible disease.

Don't ya know Tmy? Diseases are god's will...the Religious Right is obsessed with children, but only "unborn" ones...and you can't say "vagina" on the radio... ;)

The guy was 93; even with no medical problems at all he would have been doing pretty well. Plenty of reasonably healthy men die before the age of 93.

All the stem cell research in the world from 2000 until today couldn't have saved Reagan. Nobody knows if such research ever will enable us to cure Alzheimer or similar diseases.

Ahhh...yeah, right.

And exactly what studies would have 'cured' a 90 year old man of Alzheimer's if only their stem cell research component hadn't been blocked?
You will have to repost the links, they seem to be mysteriously missing from the opening post.

Although it would have been equally amusing to watch the wailing and gnashing of teeth if Bush HAD allowed stem cell research to 'benefit his evil rich political buddies'.

This is a bit of a stretch, really. While stem cell research would help Alzheimer's research, nobody's claiming it's a miracle cure; just that the research is promising.

And, yes, GW did hem and haw about supporting said research, resulting in--ultimately--a complete nondecision on the matter.

But to take that and say, "GW killed Reagan" is an extreme exaggeration. (Especially considering Reagan was 93--Alzheimer's or no Alzheimer's, it was time to go.)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and post without backup sources. I don't think any amount of stem cell research would have helped Reagan. If he had Parkinson's desease, maybe, but not Alzheimer's.

A cure for Alzheimer's is already in the pipeline. They can cure mice. Human trials were cut short soon after they began because one (or more?) people died due to brain inflamation. The cure consists of a chemical that attaches to certain proteins in the brain. These proteins accumulate after many years, more in some people than others, and eventually interfer with memory.

Let's see how good I did from memory.

The criticism of George Bush's policy to limit stem cell research is valid. However your point is lost in hyperbole.

Scientific research must not be affected by religious dogma. While we should consider any ethical implications of medical research we can do that just fine without interjecting moral concerns. This is not to say that people of faith do not have a say however their arguments must be structured around medical ethics and not religious moral law or beliefs.

Actually, Reagan was just about to publish his own anti-Bush book, in which he would also reveal that the whole "Alzheimer's" thing was just a ploy to avoid speaking in public. Knowing that this would throw the Republican party into a state of utter chaos, George W. personally swiped Reagan's pills and replaced them with poison.

Damn that George Bush. He gets away with anything.

Two thumbs way up. This forum is getting too serious.

Of course it was an exaggeration. You need snappy headlines to get attention. Thats what I learned at my internship at the Weekly World News. (Originally it was "Batboy Killed Regan)

I wanted to bring up the stem cell thing. Which probably wouldnt save Rob Reagan, but maybe Ron Reagan Jr. will have a chance if the research is allowed.

Cannibalism could solve the worlds hunger problem, too. And depending on how the raw materials are obtained, there isn't anything wrong with that either. (((note the passive voice used to intentionally obscure the actor)))

The current restrictions on stem cell research should be lifted in Reagan's honor. I think eventually, it will happen. The Religious Right has done a good job of clouding the debate so far though.

The new tack that the stem cell opponents are using is that adult stem cells are just as useful in research. However, I don't see how that justifies the restrictions on fetal stem cells.

The attempts by some pundits and politicians to link stem cell research and abortion together in one big issue are dishonest, imo.

But until you can disprove that link you will always have the 'religious right' in the opposite corner, me thinks.

Still, Reagan's desease was not, to my knowledge, one of the things for which stem cell research is touted. I may be wrong. If so, help me out with a link or three.

Do a google on stem cell alzheimer and you'll find hundreds of them.

However, according to stuff I've read :p stem cell research is in its infancy and nobody really knows if all these dreams about new cures will come through. Which, of course, shouldn't stop us from trying.

Just to be clear, I'm stepping outside my normal insanity to play the whacked-out conspiracy monger:

Remember that Reagan was the guy who saved the Republican party from its post-Nixon shame, and even made himself palatable to some Democrats. During this next week we will most likely see endless tributes and such, wherein we may all recall the glory days of republicanism.

This will tend to endear the masses to Reagan's current heir, whose policies and casual style tend to superficially resemble those of the late president. So yeah, Reagan's death is good for Bush.

The administration is probably still divided on whether to have a terrorist attack in october.
