There has been some tempest vs teapot stuff about Gov Palin burning down libraries and executing librarians who didn't cooperate. (Or something like that.) Anyhow, here is a link to a relevant piece from the local paper. In America we value freedom of speech and freedom of thought. This is what separates us from totalitatian states like North Korea. Even just asking about removing books from the library is bad enough. If you don't want to read a certain book, then don't check it out. Threatening the librarian's job for standing up for freedom of speech is even worse. I'm amazed that anyone would condone this behaviour.
If there is nothing more to the story than what the American Library Association has reported -- heaven knows it is very sensitive to this kind of issue -- then there is nothing to it. Maybe Mayor Palin was too busy with gunning down moose to bother with following through on burning down the library.
I'm a card-carrying librarian (I can, and frequently do, recite my ALA membership number -- it's what we are taught to do when tortured by evildoers). I take such issues seriously but this is just not a serious case. It's worthy of a laugh and not much else. My greatest difficulty is remembering whether Heather had two mommies or daddies. For some reason I always forget.
