Such a weird story...he's disappeared since Thursday? I'm taking the under bet on whether or not he's killed himself -- for now.

S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford’s staff said late Monday that the governor is hiking on the Appalachian Trail, ending four days during which staff and state officials said they had not heard from him.

Neither Sanford’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford since he left the mansion Thursday in a black Suburban SUV assigned to his security detail, said state Sen. Jake Knotts , R-Lexington, and three others familiar with the situation, but who declined to be identified.

Joel Sawyer, the governor’s spokesman would not disclose where on the trail the governor was hiking, nor would he reveal whether Sanford was hiking alone.

Sanford’s last known location was near Atlanta late last week. A mobile telephone tower there picked up a signal from his phone, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Since then, the governor’s state and personal phones had been turned off, and Sanford had not responded to phone or text messages, a source said. Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

First lady Jenny Sanford said Monday her husband has been gone for several days over Father’s Day weekend and she did not know where.

She said she was not concerned.

“He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids,” Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press while vacationing with the couple’s four sons at their Sullivan’s Island beach house...

Now he's allegedly been located. Seems he was out "hiking the Appalacian Trail." I'm betting he was out Vittering.

I sure wish I could disappear from my job for a few days, without making any provision for my responsibilities to be covered.

Must be nice, right?

He could go hiking for 5 days not have anyone know? Don't you need tons of gear instead of just a pair of socks and some boots?

What if there was a natural disaster or plane crash or something and the governor is off making s'mores somewhere? It's a bit irresponsible. Not to mention weird. I'm not buying the "on a hike" story yet.

Sanford spokesman:

Earlier Monday, Sawyer said that before the governor left town last week “he let staff know his whereabouts and that he'd be difficult to reach.”

“Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions,” said Sawyer.

Sanford’s wife, Jenny, also told The Associated Press Monday that she was unconcerned and that the second-term governor is “writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids.”

I wonder where his backwoods cabin is and who his boy/girlfriend is and whether they're old enough...

I, for one, approve. The more time government officials of all stripes spend hiking through the wilderness, the less time they're spending in the office governing.

The way I see it, any state that needs a full-time governor is doing it wrong. I suspect that all the really important state governor stuff could be taken care of on a part-time basis. The state legislative stuff, too. I think most of the grief our government causes us is because they have to keep busy.
