Blogger Todd Bass notes some good news from Afghanistan. "The new national currency, the afghani, is widely accepted and stable," reports The Economist. "The economy grew by 28% last year, according to preliminary IMF estimates."

You wouldn't know it, though, from reading Newsweek. An article by Sami Yousafzai and Ron Moreau claims that "for more than a year, Afghanistan has been sinking deeper into poverty, chaos and despair while the White House focuses on Iraq."

You can't keep a Great City like Kabul down. As soon as the fighting stopped business started up again. The problem that the sane part of Afghanistan - the North and West - has is that it is lumped together with the Pashtun primitives in the East and in Pakistan. That's where the chaos and the poverty is increasing, and that's all the Pashtun culture has ever offered the world. The sensible thing to do would be to abandon and seal off the eastern part of Afghanistan and let them go back to killing each other over pretty boys.
