I know President Bush is surrounded by good men. But let's face it. Not everyone has the stomach to do what they do. I think this guy just lost it.

Here's the mug shot.

The Target Loss Prevention Manger contacted Montgomery County Police and through the police investigation it was learned that Allen had been receiving refunds in an amount exceeding $5,000 during last year. Some of the fraudulent returns were made at Target stores and some at Hecht’s stores. He would buy items, take them out to his car, and return to the store with the receipt. He would select the same items he had just purchased, and then return them for a refund. Allen is known to have conducted approximately 25 of these types of refunds, having the money credited to his credit cards.

Former Bush aide pleads guilty to theft

Former White House domestic-policy adviser Claude Allen tearfully pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge Friday, telling a Maryland judge he lost his bearings while working 14-hour days and getting too little sleep in the "tumultuous time" after Hurricane Katrina.

[...]

On Friday, he pleaded guilty to a single count of misdemeanor theft for stealing items worth less than $500. He will serve no jail time and was assigned 40 hours of community service. He also has to pay $850 in restitution to Target and a $500 fine.

The case was so much more interesting when there was the possibility that it was his evil twin that did it. Him actually doing it himself is boring. "Ooh, a Bush administration flunky caught breaking the law! That'a an above the fold scoop for sure!" [/snark]

It's too bad there isn't an add on penalty for lame ass excuses. If there was this guy could end up doing some serious time.
It seems that this is not his first lame excuse.

Allen stirred controversy as Helms's campaign spokesman in 1984 by telling a reporter that then-Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. -- Helms's opponent -- was politically vulnerable because of his links to the "queers." He later explained that he used the word not to denigrate anyone but as a synonym for "odd and unusual." *
Yeah, sure.
