Captor and captive talked, and he untied her. He looked at her family photos, she read to him from the Bible and ``The Purpose-Driven Life,'' and cooked him a breakfast of pancakes and eggs.

-snip-

She asked him, she said, if he believed in miracles. ``You got out of that courthouse with police everywhere, and you don't think that's a miracle?'' Smith said. ``You don't think you're supposed to be sitting right here in front of me. . . . Your miracle could be that you need to be caught for this. If you go to prison, then you need to share the word of God with all the prisoners there.''

So once again, gunman kills 4 people; not God's fault. Gunman gives up; All praise and glory to God!

It just gets sillier and sillier.

Wait a minute. Did she actually claim that it was a "miracle" that he was able to whack 4 people and still get out of the building so he could pull off a carjacking or two, and then go to her house and hold her hostage?

Praise Jesus!!!????

Now, had the damn gun backfired and blew his friggin face off, then I might be more inclined to accept the "devine intervention" nonsense.

Clever girl, I must say. Maybe this angle (not angel) saved her life?

Could be. But then again, I am very concerned about the type of person who would fall for such an idiotic scheme.

You gotta give the lady a hell of a lot of credit for keeping her head screwed on through the whole thing. Making him pancakes was probably the first nice thing anyone's done for him in a long time; might have saved her life.

So, if you are cornered by a gunman, do you start with the God talk? Or do you stick to principles and proclaim your proud atheism?

Me? I'll do the thing that keeps me alive....so I might have to brush up on that 2,000 year old boring novel...you know, just in case!

Some things are way too stupid to die over.

hmmmm...cause: "and cooked him a breakfast of pancakes and eggs."

effect: he surrendered!

IHOP should find a way to work this into their next ad campaign.

"I was going to kill my boss for laying me off last week but I had the Rutti Tutti Fresh and Fruity pancakes and sent him a thank you note instead."

Maybe they could use that Jared guy.

God exists. He is all-powerful and all-knowing. This is why he must be brought to justice for the horrible crimes that he has caused and allowed to happen.

He should be arrested, tried for crimes against humanity, and executed.

Captured by a guy who just killed a handful of people, I would be more than happy to pray with or for him if I thought it was a way to save myself. I would even pray to Odin and Tor if he was so inclined, why not?

The power of God is the ability to talk anyone into anything with zero evidence.

It's EXACTLY what you'd use in that circumstance. After all, he had every logical reason not to do what she was telling him to do.

I hope they fry him.

How does the god squad expalin that shooting in Wisconsin. The guy shot up his church! I guess he was pissed at some sermon or sumthin.

Some of them started praying: "I wish he was dead". And a moment later he was. See? Always works!

You're kidding, right?

Not really. Although I would say my statement is more about society in general. How bad is it that we have a situation where someone could pull a "God performed a miracle by letting you get out of the building alive after killing 4 people" story and actually have someone take it seriously?

He's got a good point! ;)

But don't worry...God works in mysterious ways! As in, it's a mystery why anyone subscribes to this crap.

I guess my problem was that you are "very concerned about the type of person who would fall for such an idiotic scheme." I can think a lot of reasons to be concerned about the guy, and falling for miracle-talk ain't one of them.

My new problem is that this guy's instability (as evidenced by his falling for miracle talk, not apparently by his 3-day bondage/sodomy/rape fest and sneaking a shiv into court followed by his multiple-homocide rampage) becomes more a statement about society in general.

Bizarre...

Do you think that she used this miracle argument because she knew he was incredible instable and would fall for it? Or do you think she went for it because we live in a society wherein such loopy concepts are actually considered?

His actions say plenty about him as an individual. I still say her use of the miracle claim says more about society in general.

Bah!

How about the possibility that she used it because she's genuinely devout? And he went for it because he was tired and scared and not thinking too clearly?

Occam.
