God?, or universal "law": What determined a 'small' earth?

If God created the Earth...then why did he make it so small that only a matter of a few short years in the scheme of eonic time that we have to contend with where to put our garbage, pollution-causing global warming,"His"-people, Israel, fighting over land, etc.?

If GOD made the universe, rather than say the universe making God...wouldn't God have created a bigger world? Instead we get the likes of Jupiter which is a worthless gassy giant.

My mission in life is to try to figure out if God did everything, and this thought crossed my mind, the other day, about the size of the earth.

As wonderous as the earth is in every way...from the perfect distance for us from the sun, to all the water, to the rain cycle, to the underground aquafers and underground oil (pretty convenient for us, eh?), to all the ingredients to get us WAYYYY beyond simple survival and into sheer luxury (gaze upon Las Vegas...obviously not necessary for the survival of man)...to jets, cell phones, tv, computers, cement, glass (glasses/contacts), robotics, medicines...you name it!!!)..I still can't figure for the life of me why some all- powerful being that actually supposedly determined the laws of the universe, opted to make this tiny little thing of a planet. In the scheme of the universe, it's not even a pin prick!!!!

Any thoughts on this?

1. Perhaps we are supposed to despoil the planet and fight over its resouces in order to learn how precious peaceful coexistence really is.

2. Perhaps God knew that if the planet were bigger, gravity would be greater and all of evolution would follow a much different course.

3. Perhaps God intends for us to get off this rock as soon as possible, so he made it so small and cramped that we would be clamoring to go settle the Pegasus galaxy (I mean, as soon as Dr. Weir defeats the Wraith, of course).

4. Perhaps I need to lie down for an hour.

If GOD made our minds, rather than say our minds making God...wouldn't God have created smaller minds, so we didn't start threads like this? Instead we get the likes of Rush Limbaugh with minds that are worthless gassy giants.

Any thoughts on this?

Dear Iamme

Surely, the answers to your questions began staring you in the face the moment you prefaced them with "If."

Small?

Iamme, you have never demonstrated the ability to think critically outside of your own machinations, so let me throw this at you...

Tell me how small you think the earth is after you try to hoof it from New York to Los Angeles...

If there was a god, Iamme would not have to start a new thread for every single post. :)

If the earth was bigger we would all find it a little tricky to move around what with the increased gravity.

Also, if Earth was bigger (and its gravitational pull just a bit stronger) we wouldn't be able to reach escape velocity with our conventional chemical rockets.

And to answer your question: perhaps there is no god? I see no need for that hypothesis.

Yeah. Go to wikipedia and read an article. Then you won't have to ask these incredibly stupid questions.

As wonderous as the earth is in every way...from the perfect distance for us from the sun....

Perfect distance?

An AU is the Earth's average distance from the Sun, 93 million miles, so the Earth's orbit could decrease by 450,000 miles or increase by 34,000,000 miles and still be in the habitable zone. (More.)

Further, Earth's orbit is not circular, it is elliptical. The Astronomical Unit is a mean measure of the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Earth's position relative to the Sun varies by some 5,000,000 kilometers over the course of a year.

Right now, we are in a rather convenient place which is beneficial for life as we know it. Do note this will change in a few billion years when the Sun goes through its phases as a red giant. During this future epoch, the habitable zone will be shifted much further outward into our solar system -- and it will be a very bad time for any remaining life on Earth unable to travel far, far away.

Hot, bright, and foggy. This is the daily forecast if the sun swallows Earth. Right now, Earth and the sun are safely separated by about 93 million miles. But the sun could reach 200 times its present radius during its expansion phase. Earth's atmosphere would quickly evaporate as the planet begins spiraling toward the sun's core, which has heated up to 100 million degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, Earth would burn up before it reaches the core. Our planet's demise could take a few hundred to a few thousand years. But Earth would have company as it travels into the sun. Other planets, such as Venus, would be swallowed up by the giant star. (More.)

Still think it's perfect?

Perfect Distance from the SUN?

Try explaining that to the relatives of those who die each year from the heat or cold.

I get a little worried whenever I hear the argument of how perfectly suited the earth is for life etc. While it's true we are in a very nice spot, this line of reasoning can lean very close to "That pothole's the only place in the whole road with a puddle in it, and it fits it PERFECTLY"

...all the ingredients to get us WAYYYY beyond simple survival...
It's just a tiny little thing but...shouldn't that be WAAAAY?

I still can't figure for the life of me why some all- powerful being that actually supposedly determined the laws of the universe, opted to make this tiny little thing of a planet. In the scheme of the universe, it's not even a pin prick!!!!
I resemble that remark!!!!
