Why do men tend to get massive erections when they need feel the need to urinate very badly. Surely this is counterproductive as the last thing you need is an erection when trying to urinate with urgency?

edited to change words from slang to correct/scientific.

I forget .. isn't it because the full bladder presses on your prostate?

It's kind of like when you start your car, and all the lights come on, just so you know everything important is working. It sets you off with confidence.

Oh yes... I remember that... (sob).

Oh for crying out loud! Have a bit of class will you?

Gee whiz, posts like the above make guys like Jedi Knight, Gehngis Pwn, Lord Kenneth, et al look like they are doing nothing wrong. Further, they may end up in getting the JREF Forum banned at schools, libraries, and other areas where blocking software is used.

And if not, then at least post it in a section like 'Flame Wars' where people expect to see something like the stuff you posted.

Its a legitimate question pertaining to human physiology. Sorry if there arent enough *s to please your majesty.

It's either because of the bladder putting some pressure on the prostate or that wet dream I did moments before waking up.

I was told (anecdote alert!) back in high school, that it was because during an erection the urethra is pressed up against the pubic bone which effectively closes off any chance of unwanted urination. That was not true (as becomes obvious once we learn that semen and urine both travel through the same (and only) urethra).

Expansion of the corpus spongiosum penis (the cavernous tissue surrounding the urethra, as opposed to the corpuse cavernosa penis which surrounds the csp) creates high pressure in the urethra (which is also a spongy tissue containing blood sinuses) and apparently that high pressure causes the smooth muscle sphincter at the base of the urinary bladder to close. Thus, urine is not expelled during ejaculation and semen does not enter the urinary bladder. I assume this aids men in not wetting the bed.

The sexual arousal could also be some sort of signal to the body to 'begin wake up sequence' so they will begin to come around to the conscious realization that they'd better go visit the restroom.

Great question, men have erection during the night, but the 'piss' erection is not uncommon, I have heard that you can use a sink.

Actually its quite a complicated feat of acrobatics involving standing on one leg and attempting to get the torso as horizontal as possible. Needles to say, it can be a messy business.

As far as I am aware, 'Morning Wood' has nothing to do with needing to urinate. I don't get erections during the day when I need to urinate, do you?

I read that men generally get erections during periods of REM sleep (which is when you dream). As you usually have a period of REM sleep right before you wake up, this is why you wake up with an erection.

Obviously having been in bed all night you also need to urinate first thing, but this is not the cause of the erection.

It has nothing to do with the bladder pressing on the prostate.

There are venus/nerve plexuses (plexi?) that run laterally to the prostatic capsule inferior to the bladder, but they are not directly under the bladder (except for the sphincter muscle/nerve which is unrelated to erection)
