Saw an interesting commentary on CNN by Jeff Greenfield. He positted that Bush could be in trouble come November because of Atkins dieters. How?

An MIT study released recently showed that carbohydrate deprived dieters have low levels of serotonin. Serotonin (amongst other things) elevates mood and, thus, these dieters will be generally depressed. Usually, depressed or angry voters will vote against the incumbent (the incumbent must be the cause). Since there are 15M+ Atkins dieters currently, that could add up to a lot of problems for Bush in November.

But losing weight makes you sexier. Sexy people have more sex. Sex makes you happy (at least it does me).

But, if you're depressed, you're less likely to want sex. Less sex will make you more depressed. Vicious circle.

This is assuming those 15 million are actually dieting, and that we won't have moved on to a new diet fad by the time the ballots are open.

On the other hand, I always find that a nice rare steak (or, when I cannot afford such, a few cans of tuna fish) juices my serotonin levels up a treat.

So the Democratic Party is attractive to gloomy people. That's not news. :D

Did these MIT geniuses actually go out and ask Atkins dieters if they were depressed?

Maybe successful dieters are happier because they aren't fat anymore, and their self-esteem is elevated. And doesn't the Atkins diet include an exercise regimen? Doesn't that pump up the endorphins?

It doesn't really count as sex when you're the only person in the room.
