Police say they arrested 66-year-old Larry Brinkin, the high-profile gay activist, on possession of child pornography on Friday night.

Brinkin, a community icon who led the fight for the city to recognize same-sex partnerships, was arrested and booked into San Francisco County Jail, police said.

He posted bail and was released Saturday, according to a jail spokesman.

Police Spokesman Officer Albie Esparza would only say that the case was still under investigation, and would give no more details at this time.

Brinkin retired from the Human Rights Commission in 2010, and has been a beloved member of the gay community, with the Board of Supervisors even declaring the first week of February as "Larry Brinkin Week."

Huh, that's an interesting intersection. I'd like the internet record to show that my interracial smut collection has no racial animus involved.

Since they have internet account details, it seems kinda anachronistic for him to have VHS and floppy disks. Then again, he was using AOL...

But yeah, I've seen a few people try to use this as an anti-gay thing, but I haven't seen it gain much traction.
 
Sad experience has led me to the belief that in any group there is bound to be at least one member that has child porn or is involved in the sexual abuse of minors.
I'm not sure that kind of cynicism is actually warranted.
If the accusations are true Brinkin is a predatory racist *******.
 
I've never heard of the guy and now I'm scared of what I might turn up if I Google him.
 
I just threw up in my mouth a little. These allegations really do seem beyond credulity, but it wouldn't be the first time that a highly admired figure was behind disgusting crimes against the most vulnerable.

I follow quite a few gay media sources and I've not once seen a cry of No True Gay in this case. What I've seen unanimously so far is disappointment and a call for the justice system to do its job to determine guilt or innocence. Are you aware of anyone trying to sweep it under the rug?

Disgusting to think that he just has to pay some money and is free for a while again. Hope he gets jailed soon for a very very long time.

I'm pretty sure that was meant as a reference to the No True Scotsman fallacy ("no proper homosexual" etc), not a slight on Scottish people as pedophiles.
 
If the guy's guilty, then he should suffer the consequences. Gay men can be pedos just as straight men (and women) can. I don't see the sensationalism behind this. However, if he did abuse his position, to hell with him.
