Gay Marriage in WA

Recently, a local judge overturned the state Preservation of Marriage Act, ruling that it was Unconstitutional. His summary was very eloquent and rational, and I applaud that.

The ruling has been stayed, however, pending a State Supreme Court ruling, and the inevitable side-taking by various people has begun. I'm noticing that many people against gay marriages 1) identify themselves as Christian and 2) claim that judges who rule for Gay Marriage are "Activist Judges who legislate from the bench."

So my questions are:

1) What is wrong with people who don't understand that judges are not making new laws, but testing existing laws against higher law, that being the State Constution? Would it literally take a law that condemned Christians to be overturned before they realized that these judges are just doing their job, and that protecting a minority from the tyranny of the majority is their very purpose?

2) Why hasn't anyone identifying as something other than Christian been noted as being against Gay Marriage? I understand that Christians are the vast majority in the USA, but I have yet to see a complaint from a Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Humanist, or Athiest. Is it only Christians who hate homosexuals?

Answer to #1.. Christians are stupid, and yes it would take a law against christianity to convince them............ and it still might not.

Answer to #2... I think there are some jews and muslims against gay marriage as well, for the same religious reasons.

I challenge you to show that this is no more than an ignorant comment (precisely the type that demonstrates the same type of prejudice being denounced.

Ignorance is hating gays because a book tells you to.

Nope, the basic fact that christians base their reasononing on the bible is reason enough.

I agree. It is also ignorant to make that type of sweeping pejorative statement about Christians.

I'm an atheist, and I'm against gay marriage (and all the other types of marriage, also). Its a religious concern, therefore I dont see a reason why it deserves government recognition in the first place (much less legislation).

I dont believe I've ever heard a good argument against gay marriage. There are a lot of arguments which arent convincing:
"It'll undermine traditional values" (How? Encouraging equal rights?)
"It'll cause an increase in taxes due to additional dependents" (why not revoke all marriage for the same reason?)
"It'll lead to incestual unions" (how does gay marriage permit incest and one man + one woman doesnt? I dont follow.)
"Marriage is for producing children" (what was that about too many dependents you mentioned earlier? And what about infertile couples?)
"Gay marriage is immoral, so we dont allow it. Incest is immoral also, we dont allow that" (Incest became immoral due to the practical consequences, what makes gay marriage immoral?)
"God." (Oh.)
"God." (We dont make laws based on religious attitudes, its perfectly possible to create a healthy society without appeal to God.)
"Think of the children" (I do. If a guardian is fit to perform the duties of a caring parent, then that person or persons is capable of raising children. Nothing else is relevant.)
"You're a devil" (True.)

This is your critical thinking at work? This is how you want to show that your mental capacity is better?

I wouldn't know where to begin to show you how ignorant this statement is.

And it is only evidence that your belief is based on prejudice.

I’m betting thaiboxerken’s belief’s are based on personal experience, the same as mine when having to deal with Christians.

Could you please state your sources for the inherent religiosity of marriage?

I'm not an expert on this subject, but I will be mightily surprised if someone manages to prove that marriage has (or had) a religious basis in every culture that recognized them.

Yahweh:

You claim to be against gay marriage, for the reason that you are against all marriage. I can dig that, but I'd like a little bit more information:

Assuming that marriage isn't going to go away any time soon for those who are already allowed to engage in it, do you suppose that it's right to deny marriage to any particular group?

'Cuz, to an extent, I agree with you. I'm just of the opinion that marriage, if it's available to one, should be available to all.

And! Christian!

So, how do you feel about the issue at hand?
