Galaxy find stirs Big Bang debate

Here is a better link: http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/topstory/2004/0107filament.html

It seems like it mostly brings into debate the current models of Galaxy formation. From what I know of the evidence that supports the Big Bang model it seems that saying this brings it into debate is wishful thinking. To use an anology off of someone from Slashdot just because we can't describe how tornados form doesn't mean we should get rid of the spherical model of the earth.

Nice try though.

By "debate" I mean the exact words they used in the title of the article. :p

Some professional astronomers disagree with you apparently. :)

I conjecture that the author of the CNN.com article is not a professional astronomer. One of the professional astronomers who actually did the research, however, wrote in his FAQ about it:
Does this prove the Big Bang Theory wrong?

No - the evidence for the Big Bang is now pretty overwhelming and this certainly won't budge it.
The full journal article is accessible from his web site.

Ok I wouldn't of been harsh had I seen the title of the article but you shouldn't of posted a CNN article on science. Clearly from the more in depth article I posted and from the faq the findings bring debate to the current view of how early galaxies formed not the overalll Big Bang model.

...thats as much of an appology out of me.

Who?

I really don't understand why it is important whether there was a ' Big Bang ' or not...

Anyone?

It's a good knowledge vs crappy knowledge sort of thing. It makes little difference as you decide which shoes you're going to wear for a night on the town, yet, where the body of human knowledge is concerned, it's important.

If the universe began with a big bang, we would expect to see x, y, and z as we observe it. For years we obeserve it and see x, y, and z. Something that makes us say, "Hey, wait a minute," may be significant in that it might add to the body knowledge.

When you mean merely to relay a quote rather than to make an assertion of the statement itself, it's probably a good idea to indicate that. Otherwise people might think that you mean what you say. :p
