Unlike my fellow cruisers with time-management skills, I didn't keep a journal beyond my photos. Since I'm now waist-deep in other activities, I wanted to write something down before I forget. With any luck, your recollections will spark some of my own. It was a week of considerable stimulation, and I don't want to lose the details. Such as...

Randi's fascination with Splenda and its chlorine atom substitution formulation.

Getting a chance to get to know A a little bit better. As others have no-doubt said, the A stands for "awesome." What a kind, insightful, effusive, and upbeat soul. I think Steve Martin joked that you couldn't play sad music on a banjo*; I don't think you can be sad when A's around. Her only weakness? Promising the Freebird dollar she never earned to one Little BA.

"How sounds that?" There were but a few obstacles to us language-challenged travelers (none worth mentioning outside the airport). I'm always impressed when someone speaks my language when I can't speak theirs. I don't complain about accents. So I adopted "How sounds that?" into my own lexicon.

Getting to know Chebutykin. She's the kind of people you booked this cruise to meet. Hip, creative, funny, and impervious to the needs of sleep.

We have plenty of photographs, but we'll lose a sense of the smells. The island "fragrances" weren't all bad. And for the dry-heat Sacramentan, the heaviness of the air and the relative constancy of the temperature were notable.

Scrut is much kinder than he wants you to know. He'll punch me for telling you that, but that's OK. He endured my stories more than anyone should have to.

Getting to chat with Randi for about an hour about high school education and how it was when he was coming up. And how excited he was over the high-speed video clips I showed him.

The low-level tension hoping to not get tagged with the cruise bug that claimed a few hours of time and comfort from some of the cruisers.

The charm of Little BA. Any preteen who--upon denting her ring on a restaurant table--complains, "I find the malleability of this ring unacceptable"--is OK by me.

And the Waggletts were a kick, too. As Indefatigable as Isla Santa Cruz, and they got along better than any brothers of that age I've ever known. The journeyman guitarist even had Randi singing along to "Yellow Submarine."

Talking photo/camera shop with ScottH. And helping him capture the sharks (in images). Hard to believe we couldn't light up that island off the starboard bow with all that Canon firepower. Oh well, at least we tried.

George Hrab's Elements was a bonding experience. The stuff of legends. And what a sincere and interested guy! The last-night singalong marathon was a perfect way to close out the Adventure.

Too many groovy cruisers to mention. Hanging out with DI + wife, Doubt, DoubtingStephen, Terry, Hutch, and others whose names I already lost track of... never got old for me. And I apologize if it did for any of them.

Wowbagger's excitement at scoring an infraction on a Christian forum. You can't buy that kind of moment. Had to be there.

Trying not to overeat at every meal. Not always succeeding.

Straggling behind the hiking group in hopes of finding a composition. Then trying to catch up by galloping across the pahoehoe/boulder fields with 20+ pounds of camera gear bounding along. Trying to stay vertical and succeeding.

Jeff's bartending and storytelling in the wee hours of Friday AM. That's all I'll say about that. Except "Creme de Banana," and dumped whisky. (Spend that dollar in good health, mon ami; you earned it!)

Randi enjoying every audience that gathered around him, teaching tricks to the young'uns (out of sight of the grown-ups, of course).

Hoping for more sunshine. Being reminded of how harsh the vertical rays can be when it did come out. Not getting burned all week.

OK, I've said too much. More than I intended. And yet I haven't said enough. Anyway; your turn!

*The Magnetic Fields notwithstanding.

To many and I am still processing them....

Cruise Roomie (Cleon) didn't come but the two roommates I had (Doubt and HamRadioGuy) filled in admirably--if you are in need of a roommate in the future, these two come with the Hutch recommendation.

Wowbagger taking copious notes wherever we went--I expect the book to be published by November...;)

One thing that SkepDoc and I saw that I don't think any of the other passengers did--we were at our first town (Puerto Baquerizo Moreno) and we had (separately) walked down to the end of the small town's beach area, where there was a small pod of sea lions. A big male (let us, for the moment, name him Uri) was holding court, rearing up proud and cocky in the midst of the females.

Suddenly another male sea lion (for no particular reason, let's call him Randi) came boiling out of the surf barking furiously. Uri never even looked at him because he was flapping his flippers as fast as possible, kicking up an impressive amount of sand as he bugged out of there as fast as he could could. Randi barked a few more choice syllables his way then laid down among what was now obviously HIS harem.

I don't know how the SkepDoc felt about it, but it kept me amused all day...

For handwritten notes, I'm quite sure my wife has him beat. She could easily publish the sequel to Origin of the Species from the two Wagg-provided notebooks she filled.

Wowbagger does, however, win in the overall documentation category since his video camera was rarely idle.

Reuniting with my family was fantastic. It's been a long 18 months since I had seen many of them and while this was only the second time I had been with them IRL and for some the first time I hugged them it was as if we had just parted a few weeks earlier. I have stopped trying to explain about the JREF and simply refer to the cruise as my family reunion.

Specific standouts for me include hanging with my 'harem', I love you guys ;).

I always seemed to end up on the same zodiacs with the same 8-10 people which will explain why when I finally get my pics organized you'll see some of the same faces over and over.

Having dinner one night with Jeff, his boys and the Little BA - watching her and Jeff try to out do each other with magic tricks. The random number game as initiated by A. and inadvertently winning by being the first to yell the correct number across the room.

Standing on a lava field and bursting into tears as the scope, grandeur and realization of where I was and the people I was sharing the experience with finally sank in to my befuddled brain.

The BA and is Jedi powered lightsaber showing us stars and constellations. As well as how to cook anything that might be following in the wake. BA, using what you showed us on those nights when I got home Boo Jr and I went out on the porch and had one of those great teaching moments on planets, stars and how we can tell the earth is curved. Thank you.

The sheer amount of computing power and data storage, not to mention the apparent popularity of iMacs among my fellow travelers.

Discussing with Carina whether or not the Galapagos tortoises qualify as the last remaining true megafauna.

The food. *sigh*

My daily alarm clock of the winches lowering the zodiacs in preparation for that morning's excursions. Being gently rocked to sleep each night by the waves.

The random number game as initiated by A...

Slight correction: The proper name of the game is Screaming Numbers. The beauty of this two-word name is that it also conveys the complete set of rules.

Incidentally, the origin of the game can be traced to here:

Scrut is much kinder than he wants you to know. He'll punch me for telling you that, but that's OK. He endured my stories more than anyone should have to.

AH! I knew that already! He's great company all the way.

Scrut, you're SOOOO busted.

BA faced with a dilemma... Astrology is bad, but the pangas are good. His subconscious is uncomfortable with the dissonance. So he refers to the Zodiacs as Zygotes, et al. The waters of his thoughts may have been influenced by the tidal pull of PZ and his diabolical biological thinkings.

The high-power green laser never gets old.

Oh, and DI romancing his better half with a surprise anniversary celebration at the dinner table. It was very sweet (the cake, I mean). And nothing matches the romance of being serenaded with the Frito Bandito song.

Except, of course, having BA immediately run up and start singing "My Way."

BA's repeated flashbacks from Opera Night were a bit of an embarrassment for him and his family. You'll recall that Little BA never ate dinner with him the whole rest of the cruise.

Ah Opera Night. I was sitting next to BA. The most entertaining thing about that particular rendition of My Way was watching A.real.girl's face during the song.

I kept telling her, "Maintain, A, maintain." But we were at altitude. If I know A at all, I sense it could have gone much worse. Probably good that Little BA was there. I think A kept a lid on her true feelings for LBA's sake.

Then again, what's a serious bonding experience without some adversity thrown in?

Man alive there is lot to say. I did take lots of notes, so my list could, conceivably, be longer than anyone else's. But, lucky for you, I don't feel like publishing the entire book for this post. I will narrow it down to a Top 20 List of Highlights:

(This is mostly in chronological order)

1. Having a roommate that can escape from straitjackets, and really knows his ship.

2. The rare appearance of Randi inside a church. (during the Quito city tour)

3. Sitting across from George Hrab, on the plane to Baltra, and discovering that we were both reading the same book! (Death by Black Hole, by Neil DeGrasse Tyson)

4. Watching Blue-Footed Boobies dive bomb for fish, even before we ever got onto the ship!

5. Catching, on video, a successful Blue-Footed Booby dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eug1N7w4RE

6. Frigate Birds blowing their red sacks up.

7. Iguanas posing like boy bands.

8. All the other animals I may neglect to mention here. They are all so tame and cute and adorable and we wuv all of them so very much! :)

9. Watching Boo kick a politician's arse in a healthcare debate.

10. The mesmerizing blowhole.

11. Phil's "light saber" laser pointer.

(No, those last two were not meant to be dirty!)

12. Talking, at length, with P.Z. Meyers about this thread: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118598

13. Swimming with penguins! (sort of)

14. Hava Nagila playing over and over again, all afternoon. (well, actually, that was sort-of a downer. But, I remember it well, since I still got the song stuck in my head!)

15. Crossing the Equator, with King Neptune and the Elements (and scrambling to get more power for my video camera, 'cause the batteries were getting drained!)

16. Mustard and pickle pizza. It was surprisingly good!

17. Sucking at karaoke, but everyone being polite and claiming I did a good job, anyway.

Unfortunately, they did not have the song I usually perform, during karaoke, so I had to resort to doing one I have not attempted to perform in about 20 years.

18. The baby iguana climbing the tree: a very rare occurrence on the Galapagos!

19. The chiropractic bus ride to the wild tortoises and lava tube.

20. Watching the giant tortoises get confused when they were looking at Randi, and thinking "is that naturalist guy still here?!"

There is a LOT more than that, but this list ought to be sufficient, for now.
