Fucoxanthin is a (unfortunately named
) substance found in some seaweed. There is at least one published study which presents fairly strong evidence that it makes fat rats less fat.
A number of supplement companies are now selling fucoxanthin pills, usually in a blend with other questionable weight loss supplements. The interesting thing is that many of these ads are citing a study with the following claimed characteristics:
1) Double-blind placebo, controlled
2) Sixteen week duration
3) 160 (some sources say 110) overweight female subjects
4) By two Russian MDs, Dr. Sergey Grachev (Prof. of Medicine, MD) and Dr. Musa Abidov (Professor of Medicine, MD)
5) Average weight loss in the treatment group was 14.5, control group 3 pound.
These are extraordinary claims...BUT...
6) The study is unpublished.
7) The study is supposed to be published in 2007. They are running out of time.
8) The stuff being sold is not the stuff the tested, at least not in all cases. I'm not even able to find out what they actually tested.
If they can't get their study published, that's huge red flag. I wondered if anyone here has any more information on this.
