Saudi Arabia Says Valentine's Day Incurs God's Ire - Reuters

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's religious authorities have ordered Muslims to shun the "pagan" holiday of Valentine's Day so as not to incur God's wrath, the local al-Riyadh newspaper said Friday.

"It is a pagan Christian holiday and Muslims who believe in God and Judgment Day should not celebrate or acknowledge it or congratulate (people on it). It is a duty to shun it to avoid God's anger and punishment," said an edict issued by Saudi Arabia's fatwa committee published in the Arabic-language daily.

Guess I won't be getting my usual Valentine from Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh this year! ;)

Radical Hindus take the same view of Valentines day, to the extent of trashing stores that sell Cards and candy to threatening young people out for a Valentine's day date.

No, I do not have a source, but I lived in the Middle East for 4 years and have seen the reports on a regular basis.

So it is not just a Muslim thing, is it? And while I defended you on Cleo's thread as not being a troll, I think, in my admittedly humble knowledge, that this one might apply as a troll.

Posting about Saudi Arabia's fatwa against Valentines day is "trollish"?

Has this place gone completely mad?

Well, when you center it on one religion when others also have the same reaction to "outside influences" (For another example, some fundamentalist Christian religions do not allow their children to participate in Halloween because it glorifies the devil), place a title indicating that anyone who believes that way is somehow not as developed as we are (for is that not how most see people from previous centuries?)

Possibly, but continue upon your pathway and you'll join us soon enough, if not surpass us. :p

Let's examine for the Jury some topics in Politics, Current Events, and History.

1) Humour Banned in Nth Korea? by Mr Manifesto

Is that not centered on North Koreans?

2) My marriage is a sham! by pgwenthold

Is that not centered on Pat Boone and Christians?

3) Bibles for every schoolchild by zakur

Is that not centered on Christians?

4) Is France the world's crazy girlfriend? by Abdul Alhazred

Is that not centered on French?

But if Zenith posts about Saudis and Valentines day it is "almost trollish" and wrong.

What a morality mind-f*ck.

In practice, though, no posting on the Christian reaction to Halloween is automatically called "trollish" unless it also carefully mentions other religions.

Seldom if ever is some sort of "equal time in the original post" clause invoked, except in such cases as the original post was about Islam, in which case it's always invoked.

I have deliberately and trollishly said some of the most obnoxious and arbitrary things I could think of about Christianity and those who practice it to test my impressions, and they've never been met with an auto-defense reaction anywhere near the extent that is automatically applied to even mild criticisms of Islam and those who practice it.

Funny part about Hutch is that I was not dissing Islam.

Never in my 125 posts at JREF have I ever said Islam is evil or stupid.

But sorry Hutch, issuing a fatwa to say god will punish you if you express some affection for a fellow human being is amazingly stupid and not in tune with society in the 21st Century.

You must remember certain broad rules here.

1. pointing out a dumb Muslim thing:

Racist Garbage!!! Don't you know that Xians do X and Y!!!???

2. pointing out a dumb Xian thing:

HAHA Look how stupid these people are!!!

3. American poster saying something critical of other country:

Typical arrogant American trying to tell the world that their way is the only way.

4. non-American poster saying something critical of America:

helpful criticism

5. thousands of dead in Israel/Palestine:

Zio-Nazi genocide, the worst disaster in the world!!!

6. millions of dead in Sudan or Congo:

Never mentioned

The list goes on...

;)

Here Here!!I've noticed it too, quite often.I think it's some sort of a PC runamuke thing.I believe most people who Diss xtians here are white & do so thinking thinking of Xtians as white...which of course makes it ok to Dis them.....But the same people don't think of Muslims as white which of course means that no matter what a Muslim does he must never be criticized by a 'White person' or that white person is only doing so because he's racist!!I think that's it.

I am happy to discuss these other issues, not too many people seem to be. Africa as a whole appears to be collapsing as a continent. One ongoing tragedy. Perhaps the difference is that issues such as this are not on the front page of the newspapers.

Absolutely...everyone in the whole world is quite mad, except you. All suggestions that you are an idiot are inaccurate. It is quite possible that you are the progenitor solipsist and everyone else in this forum is just a figment of your imagination..

I think it's simpler than that. Edward Said wrote a book called Orientalism, and since then, Islam has been a particular darling of the left.
