I have a friend who recently saw "The Passion Of Christ". Since seeing the movie, he has opened his mind to the possibility of biblical truthfulness. He still takes the position that Jesus was a lunatic, but is now looking for answers. I value making one's mind up for oneself so I want to offer him the most balanced view possible.

Can anyone give me links to some good info (both pro and con) on the scientific evidence of Jesus. The historical evidence and nonbiblical contemporary accounts. The reliability of the Biblical accounts of Jesus' death. The origin of Jesus (is "Jesus" even his real name, or it is a misinterpretation?). The history/origin of the bible. And the history/origin of Christianity/Catholicism.

Thanks.

The story is standard mythology. Unfortunately, your friend grew up in a strand of society who took these mythological themes and believed them to be true!

I would recommend a very interesting and well informed book, "The Jesus Mysteries" by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandi

http://www.jesusmysteries.demon.co.uk/home.html

It is an historical review of ancient myths in Greece and Egypt that contain similarities with the catholic version of Jesus. In other words, the existence of someone called Jesus is just another version of very old mythologies that talk about the same man and the purpose of his life on earth.
