Free schools in the UK and teaching evolution

I always assumed that all publicly-funded schools in the UK had to teach the national curriculum, but it appears that isn't the case for the directly-funded free schools:

and they have been able to teach creationism instead. This loophole has been closed from next year.

I don't know if Steiner schools fall under the directly funded free schools group but at least one is funded and their curriculum is guided by teachers who are 'educated' that gnomes exist, homeopathy works and reincarnation is true. They also believe that scientific progress occurs through clairvoyance!

Education seems to be going backwards in the UK.

Our educational system was recently rated sixth in the world, which isn't too bad:

They probably didn't take any account of what goes on in some of the stranger educational establishments.
