Don't let the thread title prejudice you. Someone must be asleep at the switch in O'Reillyland, since this review is positive, nay, glowing.

Filmmaker Michael Moore's brilliant and uplifting new documentary, "Sicko," deals with the failings of the U.S. healthcare system, both real and perceived. But this time around, the controversial documentarian seems to be letting the subject matter do the talking, and in the process shows a new maturity.

...

I've never been a fan of Moore's work, but I'm inclined to rush out to this one thanks to reviewer Roger Friedman.

Will Friedman have a job tomorrow? Will the editor that let this review onto the website? Will it even still be on the website tomorrow?

I am a big fan of Moore's though I've been disapointed with his use of edits. I want to see this show. I think it is very important. Sadly the trip to Cuba was a complete side show that does't really contribute much to the discussion.

Thanks,

RandFan

I smell conspiracy, perhaps Fox news think that the film is so bad, and portrays the "left" in such a bad light that the more people who see the film the more support the republicans will get ;)

This quote from the Fox News review was pretty interesting as well:
In a key moment in the film, Moore takes a group of patients by boat to the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba because of its outstanding medical care. When they can't get into the U.S. naval base, Moore proceeds onto Havana where the patients are treated well and cheaply.
Wow!

Somebody move this to the CT forum :boggled:

First, the big Rupester announces he is going "green", he's gonna make sure the underlings in his empire shine the light of truth on global warming.

Now this.

About 3,000 more gestures such as these, and it might be time for me to reevaluate Fox "News"...

Are you sure the reviewer wasn't happy Fox had fresh meat to smear for the next few months? :D

Rupert in his youth was one of the forces behind the change of Australian Government back in the '70s from entrenched conservative to the Democratic Socialist Labor Party. His newspapers were backing them all the way.

Before seeing F911, I heard that Moore had included a bit on Bush's 8 or so minutes after he had been told the country was under attack wherein he sat still and did nothing until someone told him it was time to move. I thought it would be a side show. I was wrong. It's the most powerful and compelling part of the movie - otherwise a discombobulated mess.

I'll reserve judgement on the Cuba angle of this movie.

I suspect it is a side-show. I just find it amazing that the Fox News review mentions it in the terms it does.

Which just goes to show that perception is reality. I think far too much has been put into the affair and I've argued that on this forum. It's the typical gotcha game of politics. We don't like out leaders to be human and that's understandable.

Cuba has reasonably good and cheap medical care. They also have 1950 era cars and their entire infrastructure is falling apart. That they have reasonably good education and health care while ignoring everything else is hardly an important point.

But I think it will, from a rhetorical standpoint, be important.

No, it just goes to show that you and I fundamentally disagree on the importance of the affair.

Perhaps just rhetorically or perhaps substantially -- or perhaps not at all. I, for one, am interested in how a poor, mismanaged country like Cuba can have such good and cheap medical care. I hope that Moore offers some revelations about that, which would be substantially relevant.

The US has reasonably good cars and infrastructure. That their health care system is falling apart is hardly an important point.

I think it could be, seeing as how you dragged it in here.

I'm not sure how this could be a mystery. Cuba focuses on only a couple of things. It's all that it can afford to focus on. They have chosen education and health care and let most everything else slide. If America chose to eliminate, oh say, 95% of all other issues and programs and focus only on education and healthcare we could do just as well on those areas also. There's nothing there for us to learn from.

? I'm not sure how this follows. I don't want America to become Cuba in order to save health care. I think that is a stupid choice. I think we should fix health care and keep democracy and freedom and our infrastructure.

I brought it up so it won't simply be rhetorical in here. I'm hoping we can go beyond the rhetorical. I'm willing to consider social medicine now more than I ever have before. I don't have insurance and that fact might kill me. I mean that seriously. My children don't have insurance and that has caused me a great deal of heart ache and worry.

I think the issue important. I'm really disappointed that Moore went to Cuba since there is nothing that we can learn from Cuba. Denmark, now that I would have been interested in. Denmark has high HDI. Not as high as the US but I think they have shown that there can be a higher degree of socialism and HDI.

Cuba is just political BS. It's polemics. This is the equivalent of the Charlton Heston BS edit that Moore did. This kind of crap detracts from his credibility but it sells tickets.

So sorry, but your claim that Cuba suffers in all other areas because they make a point of providing good education and health care is far from proven. I don't know one way or the other, but your insistence alone is not enough evidence for me.

As a matter of fact, I don't really even know how good their health care is. I hear good things, but ...

I'm waiting for a Penn and Teller U.S. healthcare system video.

I found your comment arrogant and ignorant. Thought I'd send this arrogance and ignorance back at you.

I meant my comment as a joke, but your ignorant arrogance continues. Universal health care is provided here. For everyone, even non-Cubans. And you say there is nothing to be learned here?
