I didn't think this really belonged in the Trump thread, since it's more about Senators, so I started this here. If it needs to be merged, merge it.

Senator Flake from AZ retired, and then had a manly speech about how shady Trump. Although, Flake voted inline with most of Trump's ********, and overall he didn't really battle him all that much. I see this as more grandstanding than anything, but I figured how it struck others. A few snips:

The Flakester said:
We must never regard as 'normal' the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country -- the personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms, and institutions, the flagrant disregard for truth or decency, the reckless provocations, most often for the pettiest and most personal reasons, reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with the fortunes of the people that we have all been elected to serve.

Gettin' Flakey With It said:
It is often said that children are watching. Well, they are. And what are we going to do about that? When the next generation asks us, Why didn't you do something? Why didn't you speak up? -- what are we going to say?

So basically his whole speech is about how he won't be complicit, so he's quitting. He's not going to oppose Trump, or battle him, or try to make changes. He's just going to quit.

Neat words, but to me they mean jack ****.

When the next generation asks us why we didn't speak up, we'll tell them, "oh honey, literally half the country was speaking up the entire time Trump was in office. Everything that could be done in our democracy, was done. How do you not know this already? Learn how to google."

Actually the next generation will more likely ask, "Why didn't we do anything instead of just talking about it?"

And the other half will tell them, "Oh, we never really supported Trump- not truly you know... And we didn't really know what he was actually doing. And we never took him seriously when he said all those awful things. And he had some good ideas you know. And although we didnt really like him we didn't know what to do about it. And there were so many people who did seem to like him that we were kind of afraid to speak up. And when he said nasty things about Hispanics we didn't speak up because we weren't Hispanic..."

Republican politicians will say, "Oh that's so old it's not worth discussing. But hey- did you hear about the new investigation of Hillary Clinton's emails??"

And of course some people in Internet forums will explain that they never really supported Trump but they claimed to just to get a rise from the "liberals" there.

The other candidate got the most votes. The following elections have seen dramatic shifts against that person. I don't know what else the expectation is.

I was wondering when somebody would start a thread about Flake news.
I hope the small chorus of Republicans speaking against Trump grows and grows, I'm sure many other Republicans feel the same way but are too concerned about upsetting their base to do anything about it.

Small nitpick: Flake hasn't retired just yet. He'll still be a sitting senator for more than a year. At this point, Trump needs him more than he needs Trump, but Trump just doesn't work that way.

nuh uh nuh uhhh!

They're gonna say, wow good thing you guys stuck with Trump! He saved the world from the stupid dems and Russians!

I mean Hillary and Pelosi died in 2019 from a drug overdose, so good thing we didn't vote for her! Bill's in prison. We now have Monday Night Hockey instead of football. Life is great!!!

Watching this train wreck from Europe, it is extremely difficult to realize that this base not only exists but even dominates.

What is wrong with the American People?? Why aren't ALL Democratic candidates across the board already polling comfortably north of 70%? Why is anybody other than two or three billionaire families supporting even a single Breitbart/Bannon slimeball candidate?

I've been scratching my head over this question for a year. If you think we've lost our collective mind, you're right, we have.

Europe has seen cults of personality up close; the U.S. hasn't. We're putting hope in our institutions to save us. But if Trump's significant political opposition melts away ... if GOP senators quit their jobs rather than engage in this internal fray ... I'm not sure how it helps the country.

Amrika über Alles.

Sure, and eastern Europe is installing its share of populist slimeballs nowadays - but fortunately, the Czech Republic doesn't have nuclear weapons and Hungary can't put a lot of economic pressure on the EU as a whole.

Turkey is a case similar to the USA - Erdogan IS inexplicably popular among a people that I thought was more modern, more intelligent than this.

In the U.S. hints of nakedly authoritarian rule are kind of shocking. Maybe not so much in Turkey? Istanbul is/was a sophisticated place but that's not the whole country.

I'm done underestimating the allure authoritarian rule has to a part of the U.S. that thinks it can "take back" the country. They don't know who they want to take it back from, or when they want to take it back to, but a lot of people apparently trust Trump to do it.

I don't think Flake accomplished anything. He's probably hoping that by disavowing Trump AND supporting the GOP agenda he can position himself for the nomination in 2020.

He’s quitting because he can’t win re-election.
