PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia fire officials say a raging fire has engulfed a large commercial building and led to evacuations.

Fire officials had no reports of injuries, but the fire led to the collapse of a large section of the building.

From what few pictures I've seen at this point it looks like it was a mostly masonry wall lowrise building.

But it didn't collapse COMPLETELY! Therefore that proves fire can't damage steel!!!1!!1

You must have missed the word "section" in that article.

You must have missed the word "large" as well.

Also, I'm reading that basically only a few bricks stood partially intact. But the building collapsed in a relatively short time. No planes hit it, etc.

Link? I've only found two short AP articles, no pictures.

So you're saying a large portion of a large building collapsed from fire? And it wasn't hit by an airplane or hundreds of tons of falling debris? You mean fire alone and no damage or jet fuel? And you're saying that unlike on 9/11 it was being fought with water by firefighters? And you're saying it didn't have its fireproofing blown off?

Ah, the Twoof contigent on JREF.

"section" "partial" they sez.

Nuts, the picture won't stay put.

Hell do a Google news search for 'seven alarm fire" and you will see a collapsed building from fire, boyos (the fourth ever, right Twoofers??)

There was a big fire in Scotland a few weeks back that collapsed a building under construction. Apparently the planted explosives went off early.

Coincidentally, the text we used in one of my classes, Strategic and Tactical Considerations on the Fireground, was written by Philadelphia FD Deputy Chief James P. Smith. One of the book's topics is the collapse of steel-frame buildings due to fire. Not that the collapse mentioned in the OT is an example, but plenty of steel-framed buildings have collapsed (entirely or partially) due to fire alone - and that is something that firefighters have known for a long, long time.

ok beachnut, i admit, this is a very funny post.

:D

pls, the building clearly wasnt "springy" enough to arrest collapse,
bildings like the wtcs had inbuilt "springynes" that would compensate for this collaps, dont be fooled by stiff bildings and theyr collapsing behavors, ppl.
