Fibonacci's number

Can someone explain to a math deficient person (me) what the real deal with Fibonaccis number is? I understand that is is a useful ratio and that it allows certain geometric functions, but does it really show up in nature as often as is stated? i.e. body parts, plants, planets, solar system, pyramids, etc. etc. Are people who are fascinated by the number just trying to stretch it's influence or occurence?

The Fibonacci sequence has several interesting properties, but there is nothing magical in those numbers and they don't show up in Nature.
