Story
The FBI issued an urgent bulletin to several cities yesterday that warned of the prospect of an imminent terrorist attack -- then retracted the alert hours later, after the intelligence proved unfounded, officials said.

The alert went to law enforcement officials in two or three cities to warn of intelligence that indicated the prospect of an attack in the next 24 hours, officials said. Officials in Washington would not give the names of the cities...

[...]

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said that "given the potential imminence of the threat," it decided to contact the officials immediately, even as the reliability of the threat was being investigated. Further analysis determined the warning unfounded and the potential target was probably outside the United States, the bureau said.
The threats were specific enough to warn just two or three cities, but later it turned out the target was probably outside the U.S.?

WTF? Toledo, Ohio? Paris, Kentucky? Rome, Georgia? Berlin, New Hampshire? :D

The Al Queda attack took place in Khobar, Saudi Arabia at an oil (family residences) compound this morning. The chatter that caused the above warnings was probably related to this event. More than 50 hostages have been taken including Americans, Italians, French and British subjects. Early reports a Brit was killed and roped and then dragged behind a car. A ten year old child was slaughtered in a public demonstration when the terrorists attacked a school bus. The terrorists are reported to have allowed Moslem residents to leave but kept all non-Moslem hostages including children. 16 dead so far including one Americans. Clearly this was a major attack.

Its a bitch getting to pin point exactly where these terrorists are actually going to strike given their global status

not like the good old days of the IRA it was either here in my homeland or somewhere in theirs and 99% of the time they'd be good enough to phone somebody to let them know

I wouldn't say "good" enough. Many of he telephone warnings (when one was sent) that weren't hoaxes were specifically designed to make sure that members of the security forces were in attendance when it detonated.

In the case of Omagh, they warning said the bomb was down one end of the street so the Police et al evacuated people to the other end of the street which, of course, is where the bomb was actually placed.

Nice people eh?
