Falafel Offensive to Allah

And on the lighter side of the global struggle against violent extremism, it appears that Islamic fundamentalists in Baghdad have issued a fatwa against falafel vendors:
Several vendors of the popular deep-fried chickpea sandwich were told they had just two weeks to change their profession or face death. And indeed, several vendors where shot and killed simply for selling falafel sandwiches. The logic offered by the religious zealots - if there is any - in imposing this inane diktat on the people is that there were no falafels in the time of the Prophet Mohammed.

So, a number of people have been shot for selling a product that did not exist at the time of Mohammed. If only things that existed at the time of Mohammed are acceptable for Muslim use, wouldn't the list of banned items include, in addition to falafel, the guns used to shoot people? As the article notes,
Indeed there were no falafels in ancient Arabia. However, it might be worth pointing out to these same zealots - preferably with much tact - that in the days of the prophet there were no Kalashnikov automatic rifles with which to shoot those who did not follow orders.

Wow. This is, by far, one of the *stupidest* things I've ever heard. Ever.

Every Muslim alive today was not around in the time of the Prophet Mohammed, therefore they should all be shot.

Does the article say it is OK for a non Muslim to eat falafels? I like 'em but I sure don't want to get shot.

Ah. Yes. Good point.

Henceforth, all falafel sellers should be beheaded.

Well I guess that puts the kibosh on my idea to open a chain of Falafel House restaurants in Baghdad.

I refuse to believe there can be so stupid people. I'd better think they use all this crap as a deliberately provocative excuse.

Aren't AK47s popular amongst Jews and Muslims in Israel, too?
I was under the impression that Israeli Jews preferred western or home grown weapons, rather than soviet arms, I could of course be wrong.

Israel makes their own AK-47 knockoff, called the Galil gun.

here is a second source, with a few more details.

in the Torygraph article it also claims that falafel may be targeted as it's popular amongst both Jews and Muslims in Israel, which would explain why the fanatics have a down on falafel but not AK47s.

Which all goes back to one thing -- that these fanatics are beyond help.
What we are doing there is a question that will be asked for all eternity.

What is GW, Rummy and Condi gonna do about this latest insult to democracy ...this time not in Afghanistan but in the recently and allegedly democratized Iraq? Nothing, just like they did nothing about apostasy everywhere in the region including most recently in narco central Afghanistan.

But Steve! The guys with the white hats are THERE now! Isn't that enough to make all the guys with the black hats scurry back to their homes? [raises one eyebrow]
