'Blast in Iran struck uranium enrichment facility'

Satellite imagery "clearly showing billowing smoke and destruction" has proven that an explosion Monday damaged a nuclear facility in the Iranian city of Ifsahan, according to a Wednesday Times of London report .

The report quoted Israeli intelligence officials as saying that there was "no doubt" that the blast damaged a uranium enrichment site, and asserted that it was "no accident."

Officials from Isfahan have been denying that the city had been hit by an explosion.

Mohammad-Mahdi Esma'ili, Isfahan's deputy governor in political and security affairs, called the reports "sheer lies" according to the IRNA news agency. An official from the city's fire department also denied that there had been an explosion.

In other Iran news, Iranian students have stormed the British Embassy, which should be alarming considering what happened in 1979.

Hmmm... a number of explosions have been going off in Iran recently.

Also, the UK have now closed the Iranian embassy in London and are kicking out Iran's diplomats.

This could be in response to the student attack on the UK embassy but I think it is also a face-saver for Hague et al. as Iran voted in their Parliament to downgrade relations with the UK a few days ago.

Other things that have been going on is the apparent split between Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Khameinei.

They appear not to have liked each other for some time at least as far back as the election.

There was very limited coverage of the Isfahan incident, apparently. NPR's The World interviewed people living there who said the blast was strong enough to break windows and everyone assumed it was an explosion.
Initial reports confirmed this, but the stories were rapidly withdrawn/censored by the Iranians.
So... Difficult to say but not unreasonable to assume...

An interview with an unnamed Israeli official had him say (paraphrasing) " Some countries deal with Iran by negotiation and sanctions. There are other bullets in the magazine."

Considering the number of targeted assassinations of Iranian nuclear research personnel over the last couple of years... Again conclusions might well be drawn.

If it was an attack, wouldn't be Iranians be on their feet fulminating about those swines of Zionists?

Edit: Or are the Iranian leadership all secret Guardian readers who are worried about making too much fuss on account of this?

The Grauniad said:
The Israeli cabinet was reported on Wednesday to be debating whether to launch air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in the coming weeks. The prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, and the defence minister, Ehud Barak, are lobbying in favour of action, but other senior ministers are urging caution.
In response, Iran has warned, as it has in the past, that any attack by Israel would result in retaliation against the US. The Iranian news agency ISNA quoted Hassan Firouzabadi, Iran's military chief, as saying: "The Zionist regime's military attack against Iran will inflict heavy damages to the US as well as the Zionist regime."
<snip>
A congressional hearing on Iran last week was told that the Pentagon has a series of contingency plans for military action, ranging from all-out war to limited operations. Obama had signed off on these, the hearing was told.

What, and admit the stinking Jews outsmarted them?

Their MO is to nab some innocent person and accuse them of being Israeli agents plotting something or other amid much fanfare.

True, true. They might be doing a lot of nabbing, because there seem to have been a number of Careless Incidents in Iran lately - no doubt people smoking near the fuel dump I'm sure.

It does seem odd, doesn't it.

Very convenient for Israel.

Maybe it was actually an accident, but it comes at a time when there's a lot of talk about Israel considering an attack.

Probably realised they can't both rule the world... :boxedin:

Stuxnet II
With a technology embargo on Iran it's probably not too difficult to arrange for smugglers to deliver the computers needed for Iran's nuclear program, with some malware hidden deep down inside. If this is caused by a virus Iran would have to doubt their entire network.

It's all a misunderstanding. I just flipped the wrong switch in the hallway. Sorry about that, Mahmoud.

Just a quick reminder.
Name all the countries that have actually used nuclear weapons against any target, military or civilian.
How many of them speak
English
Arabic
Farsi
Russian
Other.
