Exorcism death

Here is another sad example of what happens when superstition is the filter between people and reality.

Couple Charged in Alleged Exorcism Death

ATLANTA - A husband and wife have been charged with murdering a 6-year-old girl whose back was broken in what police said may have been an exorcism gone wrong. The couple was arrested Monday after being spotted on the street naked in the freezing cold along with two other children. Police said the dead girl, whose body was discovered in a motel room, had been strangled and stabbed, and her back was broken. An autopsy was planned. Based on what the adults told authorities, investigators believe "they were involved possibly in a ritual of some sort," police spokesman John Quigley said. "It may have had something to do with undemonizing the child in some manner." Christopher Carey, 29, and Valerie Carey, 27, were charged with murder late Monday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in Tuesday editions. They initially were charged with cruelty to children, public indecency and obstruction of police and were taken to a psychiatric ward. They were later moved to a jail. Police learned of the death around 12:30 a.m. when the unidentified man and woman were seen walking naked down a city street with two children, a 2-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, Quigley said. The 7-year-old provided investigators with information that led them to the motel, where they found the girl's body. The two adults had apparently been living there for some time, possibly through assistance from a church, Quigley said.

There are an awful lot of maybes and possiblies in the middle of that, and nothing established as fact, other than the death of a child.

Do you have a link to the article, or any additional information since the occurrence?

Thanks. you need to be aware that you should always quote your sources.

I read through this, and then read some of the responses on the chat option at the bottom of the story.
Good grief!!!
The main line of reasoning seems to be that this was a crime committed by black non-jewish athiest christians in a cult. What a weird bunch of people use that board!

I stand by my original opinion that there are not enough details to make any determinations as to what has happened here.

True, it may be very likely that the couple under charges underwent some kind of ritual, under whatever banner they chose, and that it may even have been an exorcism. BUT, I don't see any evidence of that - the closts thing is an office's personal opinion.
Also a (vague) possibility, is the scenario that the entire family (there are 2 other kids mentioned here) had attempted to escape from the 'church' that is alleged to have provided 'assistance' in housing them, and met with violent repurcussions. The parents could be in some kind of shock, or been drugged, and not in a self-induced drugged stupor, or insane.

I'll reserve judgment until there is more detail. It may not have been an exorcism, or a problem with superstition as you suggested. It may have been a hate crime, or a number of other possibilities.

Atlanta police are downplaying the possibility that the murder of a young girl occurred during an exorcism, but they were still struggling Tuesday to untangle the details of her death.

Although family members told police that the parents were trying to rid the child of demons, police are questioning that scenario.

< snip >

Pages ripped from a Bible were placed on the girl's body, Quigley said, but detectives found no evidence of any formal religious ritual.

"It wasn't, as far as they're concerned, exorcism," he said.

But he said police had not ruled out the parents' involvement in some sort of quasi-religious act designed, in their minds, to banish demons.
The entire Quigley quote, missing from the Yahoo AP story.

‘‘Some of the unsolicited statements (from the adults) led investigators to believe they were involved possibly in a ritual of some sort,’’ Quigley said. ‘‘Some of the comments was that it may have had something to do with undemonizing the child in some manner.’’

But, he added, the killing seemed to lack structure or organization. ‘‘There’s nothing but a total unique, horrific case here.’’

Atheist Christians? Um, who? What?

This whole episode reeks of mental illness or serious drug issues.

You need to read the comments from the link at the bottom of the page linked to - but I wouldn't recommend it, the commenters aren't the best thinkers of the human race! There's a few who insist that non-jews are abusive and evil and will be the downfall of the world, and a few others blaming black people 'this stinks of negroes' was one incredibly awful comment.

As to your assessment, wouldn't you prefer to have some more facts before making a judgement? What if you were to find out that the parents had been terribly abused and wronged in some way by some other party?
(I do admit it's unlikely - just playing devil's advocate)

In Yorkshire they say "if in doubt, do nowt". In other words, wait to see what happens. Something awful seems to have occurred, but without more information we are just guessing.

I'd have to change my judgment of who was mentally ill. Since I haven't decided that yet, that's not hard to change.
