BEIRUT (Reuters) - The bodies of 17 men previously held by Syrian security forces have been found in the city of Hama, activists said on Saturday, victims of a deadly struggle between President Bashar al-Assad and those determined to topple him.

Turkey was due to meet Gulf Arab states later in the day to reinforce support for an Arab call for Assad to quit. The Arab League and Western countries are pushing for a U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria, resisted by Assad's ally Russia.

Elsewhere in Syria, security forces firing mortars at the northeastern town of Quwaira killed an infant, activists said.

Why is Russia an ally with Assad?

Why is "executed" in scare quotes? Do you doubt they're dead, or that they were killed by Asad's henchmen?

"Executed" implies there was due process of law, which I doubt is the case here. Murdered is more accurate.

Probably because it's the easiest way to make allies: become a powerful ally of a distressed asset. It's very cheap for Russia to veto US resolutions and they can make a small buck from it on the side.

I don't know what they stand to gain from it. Maybe just a slightly less pathetic international standing - those who dislike Russia will still dislike it, those that don't probably agree with their general anti-westerns stance anyway.

Does anyone know what the iconography of a red and white kaffiyeh is in Syria? Does the wearing of it imply anti-Assad or pro-Assad sympathies? Or could it plausibly imply either or neither?

Why would you execute a corpse? And how?

Maybe it's a zombie outbreak?

Most times there's no significance at all to the different colors, and the only times there is a significance, it's always been black-and-white for Fatah supporters and red-and-white for Hamas/PFLP supporters in Palestine, or (sometimes) black-and-white for Arab republics and red-and-white for Arab monarchies in other places in the Mideast.

I'm not aware of any particular significance to the different keffiyeh colors in Syria. Red-and-white does seem to be worn more commonly there than in other countries, though most of the time there's just a random mix based on the personal preference of the wearer.

It does? Hrm. Never noticed that before.

But whatever.
Maybe English isn't your native tongue?

Did you note the word "implies" in my post? And that "murder" would be a more accurate term?

Yes, I also noted you deciding to insult someone else's language use, on the basis the use of a word that was appropriate. You could have made the above point without being snarky.

Using the word "execute" to refer to a murder has been a pet peeve of mine. It implies a legitimacy to the killing unwarranted by the facts.

John Gacy was executed, the bodies dumped on the street were murdered.

So when someone is shot "execution-style," that implies legitimacy to you?

No, that implies they were shot in the back of the head, at close range, possibly while kneeling and bound.

If only boyntonstu would return to this thread and explain why he wrote "executed" when that word isn't used anywhere in his linked article...
