I think most Christians believe in free will and will argue against predestination, and yet I must have heard or read at least ten times today some statement such as "everything happens for a reason", "it's God's will", "it's according to God's plan" or some other variation of the same nonsense.

Eh......sorry. I must be thinking out loud again. It must be His will for me to get bat flippin crazier every day.

They pick the parts that work with the current situation. They don't remember what they said ten minutes ago because they don't think about the **** they spout.

Yeah, that does appear to be at least one of the problems.

I'll tell you, living in the bible belt can be a PITA once people find out that you are not a big "C" and don't believe in their book with the black cover and thin pages written by early sheep and goat herders.

I happen to think that everything does happen for a reason. It usually doesn't take much to figure it out. If someone walks in front of a car, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why they were killed.
In all honesty we really don't know whether it might be God's will. As a non-believer, I strongly doubt it.
If there is a God, and he has a plan, its pretty apparent that no one down here has the slightest clue as to what it is.
I think when people say these things they are just parroting back what they get from their surrounding culture, and assume they are going to have the approval of the listener.

Another one that I hate, is being constantly told how "blessed" I am whenever I say I had a happy life. Not blessed. Just plain dumb lucky, but I know they mean well so I try to swallow it.

Yes, but I believe this is more like cause and effect, while their meaning implies divine intervention.

This is what irritates me. They seem to believe that every single thing that happens is a part of HIS plan.

Most of my relatives are bible-thumping Baptists and some have casually suggested that I should be killed so I'll know for sure that I'm wrong about there being a god. We don't interact much.

But only the GOOD THINGS (tm). Anything else is our fault because some chick decided to have an apple.

Gawd, my response to that would be, “well that’s a coincidence, that’s how the 9-11 hijackers felt, but you don't have the courage or faith to die along with your victims”

And my response to your response would be "Great is the power of rationalization." Gods exist solely in the minds of believers.
