European secular views

I think this stinks not just because it shoves Christianity down the throats of everyone, but because it is a thinly veiled plot to keep Turkey outside of the EU.

I do not believe Turkey should be allowed to join the EU presently, but that is because they are persecuting the Kurds, not because of their majority religion. If and when they manage to live up to European human rights standards, they should be invited to join.

Susan, your link is wrong. This is the actual link to the article.

Thank you for putting the correct link.

Merko - I was talking to a Belgian friend yesterday and she says there is much more activity on putting the secular side of the argument in Belgium, Denmark etc, where the secular views are much more to the fore in political circles.

The following is the complete post, copied with the permission of the author. She is a strong sceptic, lives in Toronto I think, and when I asked her if I could put it in JREF, she asked what that was! So I think it is very likely that she will find this site just up her street.

Merkel moves to make Jesus top and only European god ...

“After a meeting with the Pope, Merkel said "we need a European identity in the form of a constitutional treaty and I think it should be connected to Christianity and God, as Christianity has forged Europe in a decisive way." She is planning a "Berlin Declaration", claiming that Europe is based on Christian values.”

That meddling pope should have no say in this. Maybe in his mind he’s the Holy Roman Emperor and gets a few minions to kiss his ring but enough already with imposing superstitious mumbo jumbo on secular Europe.

European Humanists are presenting the Brussels Declaration declaring Europe a religion free zone predicated on human rights and dignity:-

Meanwhile the ever-modern nation of New Zealand declares that there is no such thing as ‘state religion’.
