On the show "First Take" sports journalist Rob Parker questioned whether or not Robert Griffin the 3rd was 'black enough"

here's the link and video:

I think this is just ridiculous and if said by a white journalist "is Ben Rothelisberger "white enough?"" would be a career ending sensation.

ETA:I almost put this in sports mods, but felt it was a social commentary type issue. feel free to move it to sports if you like.

He is definitely black enough..... Soledad Obrien....not black enough....not black.

I ask the black members of the board... Is he black enough... Or just a cornroll brother?

It's "Cornball" brother.

& He's pretty "black"... dude wore superman socks...

& since I had no idea who Parker was before this blew up, I'm guessing that this is an attempt to gain readers/listeners that is gonna backfire like hell.

reading from just a bit further away from the screen than usual I saw it as "comball" which had me confused... I was like, "Uh, new technology, am I not hip to the scene again?"

Parker's comments were ignorant, wrong, dumb, hurtful, useless. But if it gets First Take taken off the air... TOTALLY WORTH IT!

All I know is that Parker looks like Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Ok, I know another thing, too. RG3 is incredible but he needs to take bettter care of himself on the field if he's ever gonna see his sophomore year in the NFL. I fear for his life with the way he throws himself at the defensive line like he's some sort of tight end or something.

First off: black enough for what? Is there like a society of blackitude that he needs acceptance into?

[enter Stephan A Smith mode]I applaud my esteemed colleague for his courage in bringing this subject matter to the fore. I admonish his audacity in questioning the vitality, nay the essence of Robert Griffin The Third's cultural ethnic authenticity. His preponderance of perspicacious loquaciousness on the matter compels me to make the following declaration: Tim Tebow can't throw and the Lakers suck because of a lack of discipline.[/end Stephan A Smith mode]

While I wouldn't rule out a ratings stunt, Parker has been saying controversial things for 15+ years and has been suspended and/or fired by different outlets numerous times.

I really don't want to hear ESPN denounce him though. With his history, they knew exactly who they were hiring and did so precisely because they knew he would say wild, attention-getting things that would boost awareness of whatever show he was on and that the reaction to most comments he would make would be negative.

All I can say about RG3 is brothah's gettin' paid!

If you watch any commericial television, his Subway ads air every few minutes it seems. Bet you thought I was talking about his NFL salary. :p

And he's gone:

Rob Parker let go by ESPN - following Robert Griffin III incident on First Take, network opts not to renew contract

Rob Parker, who unleashed a racially charged spew vilifying Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III on ESPN's First Take, has been dumped by network brass.

"Rob Parker's contract expired at year's end. Evaluating our needs and his work, including his recent RGIII comments, we decided not to renew his deal," an ESPN spokesperson said Tuesday."

The firing comes after network suits suspended Parker for 30 days last month. What changed?

Industry sources said ESPN execs were angered after Parker recently went on a Detroit TV station and attempted to rationalize his RGIII comments. During the TV interview, he said the producers of First Take knew, roughly, the direction he would take with his RGIII commentary before he went on the air.

Last month, disciplinary action was also taken against First Take staffers.

. . .

On First Take Parker asked: "Is he (RGIII) a brother or a cornball brother?"

"He's black, he kind of does the thing," Parker said on First Take.. "But he's not really down with the cause. He's not one of us. He's kinda black, but he's not really like the guy you really want to hang out with because he's off into something else."

"Down with the cause"? Does being black have to be a "cause"? It's some kind of activity?

And I called it. RG3 just had surgery on his LCL and ACL. Let's hope he heals and survives next season!

Well that explains why he showed up back at a local Detroit news channel recently, with masking tape jokingly on his mouth.
