Now I found this offer a bit dubious. But what say you, a genuinely working product or example of weird woo?

EnergyLight HF3309 (£175.00)

* Digital user Interface-for ease of use
* Energy Bar-shows you how much energy gained during session
* Automatic Timer-sets duration of session, based on distance and intensity
* Auto shut-off - switches appliance of after session
* Intensity dimmer enables you to adjust light to preferred intensity
* Pause function - allows you to interrupt and restart session

I'm particularly wondering about that Energy Bar thing and am left wondering about their definition of "energy"

Maybe Randi should invite Philips to apply for the million dollar price? Maybe the protocol could involve (method of and the actual deed of) measuring the amount of energy in a person(s) before and after "session"

The theory that exposure to light has a curable effect on winter depressions has been supported by experiments. Obviously, they have not been blinded tests ;).

How much is placebo and how much is real is probably debatable, but there is a physical theory behind it.

So, it's not woo. I do detect a slight oversell in the Philips presentation, tho'.

Do these experiments include measurements of Energy transferred between the device and person(s) near it? Well, of course there's some heat transfer happening but I really doubt if there's any ever increasing amount of "Energy" being transferred, the longer you reside near the lamp.

Of course "Energy" is being transfered; the typical lightbulb is a pretty good black-body radiator, if memory serves.

and is that the kind of energy that actually reduces depression and makes you feel all happy and new age wonder babblish?

If you suffer from a fairly well documented and widely accepted conditon known as Seasonal affective disorder, yes, in fact, it is.
