This BBC new item has me oscillating between two points of view. On the one hand the thought of 2 senior RC priests nearly going to jail is rather gratifying, but on the other I'd love to see the evidence on which they were convicted. Does anyone have any further background on this case?

There is a relation between magnetic fields and cancer (no personal evidedence just been talking to other scientist who are more knowledgable than me in this area). That does not mean that there is a proven causal link between them but its proven enough that there is regulations for magnetic field exposure.

I have had a look at some of the evidence, and it's highly equivocal. There's a thread on JREF dealing with `bioelectromagnetics'. I know there's a lot of difference between radio frequency fields and power grid emissions, but for the latter the evidence for any link with cancer is absent. I'm not dismissing the possibility of the Vatican being guilty, but I was just interested in the scientific evidence.

In real science there is always the possibility that there is an "on the other hand" explanation. If the Vatican has grilled its neighbours with magnetic fields stronger than allowed then it is a legal matter nonetheless. If you want the real science you need to scavenge Pubmed instead of hoping to find an epidemiologist specializing in magnetic fields in this forum.
