I know this issue has been discussed widely by the blogosphere, but I was surprised not to find anything here on the JREF Forums, and I was hoping to because I think there's a bigger proportion of Republicans and other politically conservation folk here than, say, on Pharyngula or Greta Christina's blogs.

For anyone unaware, following Sean Faircloth's departure of the Secular Coalition for America (for a post at the Richard Dawkins Foundation), his replacement has been announced. Edwina Rogers has just been announced as his replacement. This has come as somewhat of a surprise, as she is a Republican lobbyist who has donated to Rick Perry's campaign.

Following an interview with Greta Christina and an open Q&A on Reddit, the reacion of the secular movement seems to be largely negative. However, many of the commentary comes from folk who sit on the left, I was hoping to get some insights from other secular conservatives as to the appointment.

Good idea? Bad start? Hopes for future?

For the record, I'm not American myself, but am fascinated by your political landscape there.

What does Rogers have against the Society for Creative Anachronism?

Really, though, I have never heard of any of those organizations or people (except Dawkins and Perry) and would appreciate some description by you regarding who or what they are and what the controversy is without me needing to Google them all and read a bunch of pages to get even a basic idea of what you are talking about.

The American landscape is filled with many parks and greenspaces, frequently used on the weekends by hefty people wearing funny costumes and whacking sticks against homemade shields while chanting a ritual battle cry of 'Too Liiiiight!!'.

I think if you're calling yourself the "Secular Coalition for America", well, it's kind of hard to have a "coalition" that only invites people from one side.

Rather than lambasting them for hiring a Republican, they should be looking for more of them. If it ever happens, it won't be democrats who get the religious nuts out of the Republican party, it will be secular Republicans.

I'm in the same boat and would appreciate a reboot by the opening poster where more info is provided also.
