Edward, take THAT

Great work indeed, but apparently not very successful. The article seemed to indicate that their pamphlets (and even their presence) were not appreciated by those who came to see the show. Cognitive dissonance, probably, as the showgoers had already ponied up the $125 to go in.

We have no idea how many people actually read the “psychic bingo” cards. There will always be the closed minded people who will not want to be told they are wasting their money.

I am disappointed in what was handed out. There was no references to further information, nor any contact details. Anyone who had one of the cards would have to Google for the organisation (http://www.granitestateskeptics.org/). Even that has no contact information. So if someone wants to send an e-mail or telephone they can do neither.

see saying "It didn't change many minds..." or "didn't reach everyone..." is a lovely excuse to not do anything.

people were given the information after for a reason (contact information). And the GSS has had a surge in people going to their site and friending them on Facebook.

Point is, doing stuff besides sitting behind a computer is very important. if you expect to convert the masses in one fell swoop, you don't know much about human psychology. The point is when you make someone defend their belief, you make them confront and think about it. The more they have to defend, the more they have to think. Giving Edward a "free pass" without any confrontation (and most people were polite, the people interviewed were just a few voices, not elected representatives of the entire group attending) is just wrong. The JREF was set up as a place where media and others could come to for more information on "woo" people and topics.

Skepticism is not just about hanging with other skeptics. It's about sometimes hanging with non skeptics. And then disagreeing. For the first time doing this, it's a win. It's easy to Monday morning quarterback, but contact information... including the JREF were given after the performance.

Frankly, that's a pretty lousy bingo card. Unless it was one of many variations (like true bingo cards). I can think of several lines specific to John Edward that would most likely come up in his act.

I don't think that pamphlet is so bad. It describes the fakery techniques in a format that people with short attention spans can get. I like the pamphlet idea. Maybe our Seattle skeptics can use the idea. We want to become more proactive like this.

Deering resident Lauren Lucius was at the theater for her first show. She said she absolutely believes Edward and others can communicate with the beyond.

"I don’t know," she said. "If they’re skeptics, they should just keep it to themselves and not try to pass it on to people who are going in to hopefully enjoy the show."

There was one quote that said something like "if they're skeptics, they should just keep it to themselves". I found that odd. Imagine where we would be if skeptics didn't speak up about things that they knew were not true.
