I guess we just had a (preliminary) 4.5 earthquake in Maine. I'm practicing my guitar and the whole house shook.

Poor kitties!

Here's the USGS notice. (Slightly different from Paul's link.)

Mag 4.6, 3 miles deep,
5 km (3 miles) W of Hollis Center, Maine
21 km (13 miles) NW of Biddeford, Maine
21 km (13 miles) NW of Saco, Maine
22 km (13 miles) WNW of West Scarborough, Maine

If you felt it and haven't yet reported it, do so at this link: Did You Feel It?

(More reports means better Shake Maps for future hazard assessments!)

I just did that reporting. Pretty cool tool! Wasn't sure how to respond to the damage so I just said no damage. I don't think they count 1/4 pound wooden kitties with a high center of gravity.

Felt it here in Vermont. House shook for about 5 seconds or so, with a low rumble. No damage. First unambiguous earthquake we felt since moving here 10 years ago.

A 4.2 out east can be felt a LOT further than a 6.2 out in California. And if someone more savy with math than me took a look at this we could probably start to figure out the shape of those remanent plates of rock underlying that part of the world (seismic waves will move faster through solid rock than broken rock). Very cool!

Also, stay away from windows. During my second quake in California the manager felt the quake and walked to the window to watch the building shake. Problem is, even a minor quake can distort the glass enough to shatter it--and which way the glass flies is pure chance. One of the lesser-known dangers.

We lived in ca for a long time and we are used to larger ones. We felt it but we're not sure that it was a quake
