So it's god's will. God is punishing them...but for what? The religious will, I assume, conclude that it is for all kinds of nasty things like sex, and westernization, and letting women get uppity, etc. But why?

Why not conclude that god sent the earth quake because the society was too conservative? Too fundumentalist, not rational enough? In other words, why can't one think that god smote them because they aren't a more open society?

Well...I'll just wait and let Pat Robertson explain it all too me.

if their religious documents encouraged liberal, rational lifestyles, then they might assume the "punishment" was due to being too conservative and irrational, but, alas, they dont. or if they did, it isnt the popular belief that they do, so they look at all the things their religion condemns, find those things in society and point the finger.
