He just pinched his cheeks to "give them a little color". That's the old-fashioned trick my mother used to urge on girls....until the day that one pointed out "what, by breaking capillaries and inducing internal bleeding?" Somehow, things lose their folksy charm when subjected to analysis.

Edited to add: as for the lipstick, I have no idea why he's wearing it. Or why there's a matching stain on George's collar.
