My lab Sammie is blowing her winter coat and I, being nostalgic for carpets that don't have an off-white sheen hours after vacuuming, noticed some products at the pet store that claimed to reduce pet shedding.

Here's an example of a "vitamin spray" that is applied topically:

Here's a nutritional supplement:

Anything to them, or bunk? My mind screams BUNK but it seems worth asking about.

I don't know about the "Miracle" spray or the supplement, but I have found that this works very well for my German Shepherd.

Do you think that works better than the fine tooth rake comb? I've been using something like this:

(with a rake handle) and it pulls out some pretty good mounds of loose fur, but I'm more than willing to try something better.

Thanks!

Yah, I have tried both on my GS, Sterling. The mean looking shedding tool does wonders. I like to use it in the unfolded setting. Results may vary though on other varieties of pups, though. Hey, don't we have a few veterinarians around this forum somewhere...?

I use a curry comb (horse comb, 2 sides, one with fingers and one with sawteeth) on our dogs.

The Border Collie Lab cross loves the finger side, because he has a long coat, and the blue heeler/boxer/whatever cross loves the sawtooth side because of her short coat. I try to brush them both every 2 days this time of year. It's shedding season.

I find patterned Axminster is quite effective as well....

Rolfe.
So, new dog or new carpet. :) Hmm, well, I guess it's time to brush out the dog. Thanks!

Re: Poodles. Does their hair grow to a limited length before dropping out, like, er, well, pubic hair (Billy Connolly springs to mind here). I've never seen a poodle that hasn't been clipped regularly, and can't help wondering if they'd end up like that unsheared Marino sheep that they found a week or two back.

The reality of poodles is that they don't live more than a couple of weeks. That's why you always see them clipped and groomed. That's how they come from the cloner's vats. "Owners" just have a subscription to a poodle service, sort of like a lease with automatic upgrades as newer version os poodles are developed.

Ahhh, that does explain a lot of things about poodles, actually. Thanks for letting me in on the secret :D

They are being upgraded. Every year the poodle's current RLD (rotten little dog) rating is increased.
