Do Athiests Need a Holiday?

Christians have Christmas and Easter. Jews have Rosh Hashanah and Chanukkah. Muslims have Ramadan, and the Wiccans have the Solstices and Equinoxes.

Should non-belivers get some holiday to spread the good word, and celebrate our rational state-of-mind? Would it be useful for publicity, and a good day to reflect on our non-superstitious ways of life, and maybe to give each other practical gifts to aid us in the upcoming years (encylopedias, calculators, books by Dawson)?

Thoughts?

We already have one...the National Day of Reason. It is automatically set to be the same day that the President declares the National Day of Prayer. Cute, eh?

I just went here but the site is temporarily down. Try it in a few days.

April 1st" . . . "The fool hath said in his heart there is no God." (Psalm 14:1)

But frankly. I think .
No leader have had the guts to declare an Atheist holiday day.
And none have had the power or charisma to mandate the all the atheist to celebrate on the same day.

I'm okay if I'm proven wrong.

Well, technially the vast majority of them are solstice and equinox celebrations, with layer after layer of relgious myth piled on, combined with some mild drift of the various calendars over the centuries.

How clever and intelligent! "My book says your a fool so :p"

April fools day sounds good, Athiests could use it to think of all the poor fools who use this arguement.

The fool hath said in his heart-"the fool hath said in his heart there is no God":D

That a Christian would say such a thing makes me, an athiest, outraged! I hate Christians now and will never give it consideration anymore! And because of that (in their world) I must be going to hell. And because their actions have caused me to damn myself to Hell, in their world they will go to Hell, too.

:jaw-dropp

I guess they should have thought of that before turning people against Christians with their mean behavior. If that's how Christians behave, I want nothing to do with it.

Yeah, I thought we already had Christmas? If we didn't, then why are all those sad-sacks crying about putting the "Christ" back in "Christmas?" Obviously that means someone took it out, so it's okay for us to celebrate it.

Just wait until the day they're campaigning to "put the violent death back in Easter," because then that will mean we got that one, too.

I've always liked Skeptember. With all the BS we put up with, we deserve a month. If the suits at the company you work for don't like it, we take a page out of (Seinfeld's) Kramer's handbook:

KRAMER: You know you're infringing on my right to celebrate new holidays..
MANAGER: That's not a right.
KRAMER: Well, it's going to be!

I like the idea in general but I think the focus should be less on atheism and more on rational thinking. I'd propose a national 'use your brain' day.

An atheist holiday would probably only serve to further ingrain the silly notion that atheism itself is a belief system or a cult or a religion.

Here in the U.S. we should probably start with baby steps.

How about a national "Separation of Church and State day?" It seems a shame that we might need a day to remind ourselves of this important facet of our constitution but it sure seems to be needed now days.

I always thought the Festivus concept from Seinfeld was a good idea.

Either that, or -- I recall an advertising campaign stating that "Wednesday is Prince Spaghetti day". Perhaps every Wednesday we could pay tribute to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I like my atheism disorganized. So no atheist holiday, because I don't want my (personal) belief to be taken as similar to a religion. Besides, I can just use Christian holidays anyway, since no one has excommunicated me. Now if only this government would acknowledge All Saints Day so we can get a holiday to digest all that Halloween candy...

I LIVE!

I'd just like to say that atheism itself should have no holiday, but we as secular people should celebrate important/fun dates in a society, such as our American Independence day (or whichever day your country was born), April Fools, New Years, or Thanksgiving.
