Howard Dean (incorrectly) tells Pat Robertson the 2004 Democratc platform defined marriage as being between a man and a woman. But wait, there's more:
Dean said that "one of the misconceptions about the Democratic Party is that we're godless and that we don't have any values."

He went on: "The truth is, we have an enormous amount in common with the Christian community, and particularly with the evangelical Christian community. And one of the biggest things that Democrats worry about is the materialism of our country, what's on television that our kids are seeing, and the lack of spirituality."
Link (emphasis mine).

Tony wasn't immediately available for comment.

Once again, Cleon's reasons for not voting Democrat are made abundantly clear.

Why the surprise? Republicans don't own Christianity, as much as they'd like to. As for the Democrats' official position on gays, they don't give a damn about them. Defense of Marriage Act? Don't Ask, Don't Tell? Democrats aren't for gay rights. They're just less against them than Republicans are.

The only time any politician cares about gays is when they make up a significant portion of voters in a given district. Then, suddenly, they care.

That's not true, of course. Democrats just aren't willing to sacrifice their entire platform for a single issue. Any party that would is not a party that will ever accomplish much.

"Don't ask, don't tell", by the way, was an improvement for gays, and the best that could be had at the time.

Damn dude, you're all over my sack. I must have made an impression.
Ah, good, it's morning in Houston. Talked with Mrs. BPSCG mère in Dallas last night and she tells us she's had the A/C on for a couple of weeks already, so I imagine in Houston it's as steamy as that scene in Monsters' Ball.

So waddaya think, Tony? Is Howard Dean a fundy nutjob? Or is he just sucking up to them?

Actually, for the past two days, it's been really nice and really beautiful outside (But we run the AC anyways. AC is a way of life down here.
). I don't expect it to last long. Summers in Houston are like winters up North, you go outside as little as possible.

Either he is sucking up to them or he just made some off-the-cuff remark. I don't know, I didn't read the entire article yet.

Mrs. BPSCG went to Rice and worked in Houston several years afterwards. From what she tells me, your analogy is a little off, in that:
  1. Summers in Houston last about six months (May to October); winters here barely last three, and;
  2. When winter comes, we do go outside, 'cuz the skiing stinks indoors.
Either he is sucking up to them or he just made some off-the-cuff remark. I don't know, I didn't read the entire article yet.
Well, let me know. I'm just curious how far to the left on the political spectrum you think the fundie nutjob blight has spread.

Yeah, instead of being the party that opposes the intrusion of religion into politcs, the Dems are starting to pander to the Religious right too.

It's doubly stupid for them to do it. The Republicans can at least credibly paint themselves as being on the same idealogical page as Pat Robertson's ilk. It's not as believable when the Dems try it. So all their bootlicking accomplishes is pissing off the people who don't like mixing politics with religion while gaining them nothing fromt he people they are trying to pander to. Idiots.

"Don't ask, don't tell", by the way, was an improvement for gays, and the best that could be had at the time.

It is the perfect example of the definition of "compromise" as "neither side gets what it wants and they're both angry about it". Those against still have gays in the military, doing whatever harm gays in the military are supposed to be doing. Those for notice that to stay in, gays have to pretend to be straight, because gaiety isn't as good as straighteity.

A lesser evil isn't a good, and doesn't deserve thanks and gratitude.

I agree with Nyar here. It's been a long time since the Democrats had any street cred with the fundies; not since the party shifted to the Left in the 1960s. Howard Dean could come out for the public execution of abortion providers and the Christian Right would STILL not switch parties. I'm sure even they see that this is a bad attempt at campaigning and Dean is just playing on their homophobia to buy votes.

Which sort of tells you where homosexuals stand in his worldview: As pawns to be played with and scraficed for the gain of "the party."

However, the same can be said for the Republicans too. (See Nixon's "Southern Strategy")

Could you please remind me of this post next time someone gives me a hard time for saying "Bill Clinton did the same thing...?"

Thanks.
