Diet soda linked to heart attack and strokes?

The more obvious conclusion is that those at higher risk for stroke and heart attack tend to drink diet sodas.

Yep, the first thing that came to my mind when I read this article was that almost everyone I know that drinks diet soda tend to already be overweight and have other health problems. Of course, it's a completely unscientific observation, and I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it.
 
Do we get to choose? Can we just skip straight to the heart attack, or do we have to drink diet soda first?

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and switched over to diet sodas. I hope this study is as flawed as the article suggests. I've had to eliminate orange, grape, and apple juice, and have cut back on milk. I'd hate to drink nothing but water the rest of my life. At least there's Crystal Light. And hard liquor. :D No carbs there!

My preferred drink is orange juice mixed with diet lemonade. Am I going to die because of this?
 
The bad part about presenting this study as though it shows that drinking diet soda is bad for you is that it may be helping a lot. After all, if most of the diet soda drinkers are those at high risk, and now their risk is just a bit higher than those at average risk, this suggests that their risk has actually been substantially lowered (i.e. it would be much higher if they weren't drinking diet sodas).

The number of people who buy burgers, large fries...and diet coke. Its a running gag these days! I don't think the diet coke would be causing the problems!
There was a series on tv recently (In Britain) and trying to remember the part on diet drinks and sugar replacements, there was a study showing using these made people burn less calories of the meal they were eating.

It is still an extra 210 calories that most people probably don't need in their diet.

Diet drinks are not going to make people burn less calories. Not moving is going to make people burn less calories.

There is the tendency of people to think 'Oh, I am eating a diet cookie, I can eat three of them', when in reality, they are only 10-20 kcals less than the 'full fat' cookie.

You really need to read the labels of the "diet" or "lite" products to make sure it's worth it. I often find they are only about 10-20 calories less which hardly seems worth it. But diet sodas are worth it. I started drinking them and the positive changes I had from it are something. Granted that's just my own personal anecdote.

Absolutely.
I am going to drink a lot of fluid, that is a given for me. While I do drink a lot of water and iced tea, I must and will drink a goodly quantity for sweeter drinks. My choices are something with several hundred calories, and something with zero.

Diet sodas won't make me lose weight, but I would be gaining a bit more wihtout them.
