That was my thought when I clicked on the thread ...The more obvious conclusion is that those at higher risk for stroke and heart attack tend to drink diet sodas.

The number of people who buy burgers, large fries...and diet coke. Its a running gag these days! I don't think the diet coke would be causing the problems!
There was a series on tv recently (In Britain) and trying to remember the part on diet drinks and sugar replacements, there was a study showing using these made people burn less calories of the meal they were eating.

It is still an extra 210 calories that most people probably don't need in their diet.
Diet drinks are not going to make people burn less calories. Not moving is going to make people burn less calories.
There is the tendency of people to think 'Oh, I am eating a diet cookie, I can eat three of them', when in reality, they are only 10-20 kcals less than the 'full fat' cookie.
But diet sodas are worth it.
