Politico: DeSantis asks protesters to stay out of Florida roads in reversal on anti-riot law

On Tuesday, DeSantis sidestepped a question about whether authorities should arrest people blocking roads as part of protests in solidarity with Cuba. Those demonstrations popped up in several cities as Cuban Americans voice their support to Cuban protesters who are demanding an end to the authoritarian regime that has controlled the island nation for the past six decades.

On Thursday, the governor reversed course and said that authorities could not “tolerate” people blocking roads.

I think he's created trouble for defending the new Florida law in court--despite hastily backing away from selective enforcement, he demonstrated how easy it is for selective enforcement to occur.

"I don't understand. I put the 'this law only applies to people I disagree with' in subtext so hard I don't know how to put it in there any harder!" - DeSantis.

You're telling me that cops have an option besides strapping on mad max gear and beating protestors bloody while shooting people's eyes out with rubber bullets?

ETA:
Two men arrested in Tampa during Tuesday’s protests against the Cuban government appear to be among the first Tampa Bay defendants held under Florida’s divisive new “anti-riot” law.

Julian Rodriguez-Rodriguez, 30, of Tampa and Maikel Vasquez-Pico, 39, of Riverview, were arrested by Tampa police on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting law enforcement and taking part in an unlawful assembly that blocked streets or sidewalks, records show.

Until a few months ago, Rodriguez-Rodriguez and Vasquez-Pico would have been able to post bail immediately according a pre-set bond schedule. But jail records show that both men were being held Wednesday until their first appearance in court because of HB 1, the bill passed by the Republican-led Legislature and championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, who signed it into law in April.

Lol protestors against the brutal police state of Cuba automatically denied bail because DeSantis passed a anti-protest law trying to prove he's the baddest fascist of the bunch. Beyond parody.

Obviously the biggest question is how will the Cuban community respond to this? As we saw last election cycle the GOP was picking up more and more then the Cuban community, as well as a decent amount of the Latinx in general. Cops should do their jobs, but either way it might not go over well.

DeSantis is definitely passing the blame already, "...but, but, but Biden hasn't done anything! Blame him!"

The man was just loving on Biden a few days ago, more proof that there's nothing to trust from these jokers. Everyone's out to score political points.

What exactly do these jackasses want anyway? The US government is already overtly opposed to the current Cuban government. There's been a blockade for decades that has been a painful thorn in the side for the entire country. What more could they possibly want, a land invasion?*

Not sure exactly who these people are protesting by clogging up the freeways, because it surely isn't the local Florida government which is clearly already on their side.

*I fully support loading all volunteers up onto boats for Bay of Pigs 2.

According to the articles they're just walking in solidarity.

I'm sure they'll be fine. Hopefully everything works out and the charges are dropped, but if they did actually assault an officer then you gotta do your time.

Hopefully the Cuban government will be pointing out how much more repressive the US is in suppressing demonstrations and locking up protestors pre-trial than the Cuban government is. The US government's track record on
treatment of prisoners in Cuba is probably worse than the Cuban government's!

And if they did block traffic then they should be subject to the same law that DeSantis intends to use on other protestors. If that law should be more lenient then you fix it by changing a law that probably shouldn't have been passed in the first place.

On second thought, I wouldn't mind if this is the sort of case that gets it overturned. Republican-appointed judges then more likely to seriously consider questioning the constitutionality.

I usually question people who kneejerk think of every political decision of a leader as some big-brained move to score political points.

I have to say I can't give DeSantis that benefit of the doubt seeing how he's operated the past year.

This isn't the first time that a De Santis "get tough on librul voters" law has managed to snag his own voters in the net instead. It's almost like they haven't thought it through...

Yes.

Seriously, that's exactly what they want.

We get upset when China says Formosa belongs to them. We laugh hysterically at Palestinians thinking they still have a 'right of return'. And we are still waiting for the chance to liberate Cuba from the clutches of those commie invaders.

Just how far back do they want to go? 1933?

ETA: I was aware the Cuban Revolution long pre-dated Castro, but was not aware how far back.

How many BLM protesters have been arrested under the new Florida "anti-riot" law, solely for blocking roads? I have no idea, but my Google search didn't turn up any numbers.
Could that be because...BLM protesters didn't actually block any roads??

Naw, that can't be right. It's a statement of alt-right "fact" they did. Fox told them so.

No doubt that Florida cops would vigorously and gleefully enforce this law on BLM protestors, but I don't think it was passed in time to be used when these events were happening with more regularity. The law wasn't passed until April of 2021.

I'm sure we'll find out whenever there's a protest in response to the inevitable police murder of someone in Florida. Until then we just have to settle with right wingers stepping into their own traps.

Do you mean to say that the Florida cops were not permitted to violently harass and break up rallies like BLM before this legislation?

If "No" then BLM protesters should have been arrested for looting already. Has that happened?

If "Yes" then this legislation is somehow a license for Florida cops to be more aggressive. And yet the only offenders it is snaring are right-wing nutcases, not BLM.

So where is this mythical BLM arsonist? Anyone?
