Split Thread DEI in the US

Why is it dense to believe that merit should be universal?

Why is it dense to believe that desperately unqualified people like RFKJr, Pete Hegseth, and Kash Patel shouldn't be put in charge of portfolios that they should have no business controlling? Why is it dense to believe that these portfolios should be headed up by people competent to run them?

Why is it dense to believe that political appointments should be made on merit, and not cronyism? I don't think that's dense at all. I think that's sensible.
Art - political appointments are extensions of the executive. The executive gets to pick who he/she wants in their cabinet. If that were not the case, then elections would be pointless.

You know that every executive will say their choice is the best choice. Our political system allows the executive to make the choice.
And the executive should choose the most meritorious people for the position. The executive clearly is not doing that. The executive is choosing cronies and sycophants. Do you think that's better?

If the executive does not get to pick his/her cabinet, who does? What's the point of electing the executive at all?

Why would you want to elect an executive who picks his/her cabinet on cronyism and sycophancy instead of on merit?

Especially while running on a platform of meritocracy?

Can you name an executive who doesn't?
Yes.

Lloyd J. Austin served as Secretary for Defence under Joe Biden. He was a retired 4-star general who had served in the 82nd Airborne and the 508th Infantry. He was ACD-M for the 3rd Infantry division in Iraq in 2001, which secured Baghdad, and for which he was awarded the Silver Star for valour. He was commander of the CJTF-180 in Afghanistan, Vice Chief of Staff to the United States Army, and CENTCOM commander.

Before him, William S. Cohen served as Secretary for Defense under Bill Clinton. He had spent 24 years in Congress, House and Senate, and served on the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1979 - 1997 and was Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee from 1987 to 1991. He was also a Republican.

Pete Hegseth is a TV host whose only qualification is that he licks Trump's boots.

Ugh. You're not really saying that Biden, or any all the presidents before him, didn't chose his cabinet based cronyism and sycophancy, are you? Jennifer Granholm for Energy Secretary? What? Sole supreme court nominee can't say what a women is? What, what?

I'm saying that Lloyd Austin and William Cohen were far more qualified for the position than Pete Hegseth is.

Is this the same Pete Hegseth who orchestrated the surgical removal of Maduro with zero American KIA? And is that the same Lloyd Austin responsible for the disastrous Afghanistan withdraw? William Cohen was alright.

If you are under the delusion that Pete Hegseth was at all involved in the organisation of that operation, I've got a bridge to sell you.

And is that the same Lloyd Austin responsible for the disastrous Afghanistan withdraw?
He made the best ◊◊◊◊ sandwich that it was possible to make under the circumstances. And are you forgetting the Silver Star he was awarded for securing Baghdad in 2003? Have a look at his service record before disparaging him for one operation.

William Cohen was alright.
He was certainly more qualified for the job than Pete Hegseth, who was not a Senator, nor a Congressman, nor served on any Senate Committees.

The Trump administration, for all its talk about "meritocracy" in its policy of cancelling anything referring to diversity, equity, or inclusion, cares nothing for meritocracy. The War on DEI isn't about meritocracy at all. It's about censorship, white supremacy, and dominion.
