That was the caption on the fax we got this morning.

The fax continues:
  • Americans turned out in record numbers at the polls on election day.
  • The republicans are claiming a COMMANDING victory.
  • But many Americans are still outraged over the WAR IN IRAQ.
  • With 4 more years...
DID AMERICA MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE ELECTING GEORGE W. BUSH?

___ YES ___NO

TO VOTE, simply check your vote above and fax back to us.

Fax To: 1-900-226-1444
Calls cost three dollars and ninety-five cents per minute, a small price to pay for moral values.

THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THIS POLL WILL BE SENT DIRECTLY TO OUR CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS.

Poll Commissioned by: Greatgain, Ltd., 450 High Road, Essex, UK

For mailing list removal, please call 800-490-9373
I googled "Greatgain, Ltd." and came up with these:

Missouri sues fax blasters.
NC AG Cooper joins “Operation Roaming Charge” targeting telemarketing fraud

$3.95 to register your vote. I guess if it cost that much to vote in real elections, the budget deficit would be coming down a bit.

A check at Companies House has an address of :
GREATGAIN LIMITED
24 SAINT MARYS AVENUE
BLETCHLEY
MILTON KEYNES
BUCKINGHAMSHIRE MK3 5DT
Company No. 04800362

The company was incorporated in June 2003 and has yet to submit accounts (which is normal). It doesn't seem to have any web presence.

However, I have found that it is next door to a newsagents phone +44 (0)1908 378274 so I guess you could phone up the newsagents and ask them to pop next door and punch the guys on your behalf :)

I've recieved faxes from that same company as well.

One of them had the cajones to say "would you like to still recieve our faxes? Yes, I find them interesting and valuable___ No____"

the rest of the text was the same as BPSCG example above.

No shame.

...or you could just call the fax removal number at the bottom (not that ever works)

They usually pick hot button topics that are currently in the news. I wonder what percentage of people fax them back (I picture temps and mailroom employees "making their valuable opinions known!" and faxing these back)

I do this occasionally, not that it works, but someone has to be paying for the 800 number to call for removal. Perhaps if everyone did, the cost per fax would go up enough to discourage them.

Interesting... I wonder how they stay in business... because while spamming is questionable... spam faxing is very illegal and easy to trace.

Dont forget though, an 800 number isn't necessarily toll-free anymore.

Also calling an 800 number gives them your phone number even if you have a private number.

Bletchley is about a 75 minute drive for me. The address appears to be just a private house. Perhaps you would like me to call round and ask them to explain their business practices? I could fit in a visit to the Station X museum as well, always wanted to go.

Really? I guess I'm out of the loop... Do you have any cites for this, I want to read up on it. I'd assumed they were all still toll free.

Does the U.S. national "Do Not Call" directory apply to fax senders?

PHISHING expedition. ANY response is a good response to these people. So I'd suggest faxing a response to them from a public phone-booth in Uzbekistan. Or ditto, rural Texas. Or a local knocking-shop number reverse-charge. Fun to be had with imagination...

Our good friends in the UK regarding American voting.

A long time ago, the US Supreme Court made it ilegal for a poll tax to be obtained when voting. However, this is not a vote, it is a proper means for a lobbying group to obtain opinions from voters in the US to notify their local Federal representatives as to their view points.

Since a lobbying group has to present their credentials and be recognised, I doubt if these folks have gone through this trouble. Also, ot is illegal for a non American based group to perform this type of request. If you can't vote here, you can't play the game.

As to the legality of their faxes...absolutly correct.

I think I am going to go phishing and see wha I can catch.

wink wink nudge nudge...know what I mean.
