I'm in almost a state of shock with just watching the headlines of the news today:

12 Nepalese hostages killed:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/3614866.stm

Bomb in Russia:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3615970.stm

Bombs in Israel: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3614614.stm

Plus the ongoing drama of the French hostages.

I genuinely feel shocked and horrified today. Will we (as humans) every outgrow this use of violence?

The good news is, most of us have. Imagine if all 6 billion of us were this ticked off all the time.

There was a time when you would be a freak for feeling as you do. Now you're merely less stunted than the rest of us. In a sense, we are making progress.

That's a positive way of looking at it. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any "group" or any "one" of us that won’t resort to such violence at times.

We need to invent the "Ghandi" drug and does the world.

Stephen King once wrote a short-story on that. :)

What puzzles me is........where the heck is Lucianarchy?

There is a movie called "Equilibrium" with that premise. It's sort of a "B" movie, but it's thought provoking and has some good action sequences.

Blah you! It's not a B movie, it was just horribly promoted.

I call it a "B" movie because nobody ever heard of it and there are some holes in the plot you could drive a truck through. Granted, the plot difficulties don't distinguish it from many more popular movies. The effects were great, the action was great and the story line was thought proviking. It's well worth the time to watch.

Since I saw the movie one weekend on cable, I've been wondering if your nickname is taken from it. Was it?

Humans will never outgrow violence. It is part of our nature. I too was scanning the headlines and wondering what the hell is wrong with some people, don't they ever stop even once and think about the legacy they are creating for a certain demographic of the earths' population...

Funny I just watched that the other night. Good fight sequences...but huge plot holes. ;)

Yes and if I paid attention I would have not used the second 'r' and spelled it properly :)

Not to overly derail this thread, but which huge plot holes do you speak of? I know they are in there, but none really stuck out enough to lower my enjoyment of the movie.

Certainly they do. This isn't about violence, except as a means to an end. This is about shock-value politics.

The militants said the 12 Nepalis had been executed because they "came from their country to fight the Muslims and to serve the Jews and the Christians".

So much for being subtle, eh?

There was also the Simpsons Halloween episode in which Lisa used the monkey's paw to wish for peace. Then the aliens invade:

"Hah hah hah! Your superior intellects are no match for our puny weapons!"

Off the top of my head, the public weeping and then "slipping" away. Of course, one can always explain it as he was passing it off as part of his bigger act, but to the rest of that movie's world, it wouldn't make sense for someone to be caught crying and then not punished for their sense offense.

Then you know, he walks into a room full of people shooting and kills them all with out even being grazed because of MATHEMATICAL PROBABILITY. That alone makes me ignore any plot holes.

Yeah I guess that one was kind of bad.

That's only if you over think the movie :)

1) When Preston gets caught with the dog in the sprawl he eliminates the guards with two guns, when he frames Brandt in Dupont's office there is only one gun as evidence.

2) Dupont gets angry with Preston during their first meeting, anger is an emotion that Dupont should not exhibit if he takes Prozium.

3) When Brandt is beating Preston infront of the public he is angry, then happy and spiteful, emotions that Brandt should not exhibit if he takes Prozium.

4) When they discover the "room" in Mary O'Brien's apartment they have to go through 9 inches of concrete to get into it. How does Mary get in there normally?

...to name a few...:)

Not in any meaningful way, unless it happens overnight.

As the amount of violence goes down, people will simply become more horrified at the violence that remains.

Just sticking to US figures, because they're easy to get: Right now the US in this war/occupation thing that has killed about 1 American in 330,000. When I was a kid, the US was in a war thing that killed about 1 American in 4000. When my parents were kids, the US was in a war thing that killed about 1 American in 450. When my grandparents were kids, the US was in a war thing that killed about 1 American in 650. When my great-grandparents were kids, the US had just gotten done with a war thing that killed about 1 American in 150. At this point you're also getting back to times when people were executed for theft.

It's been generally worse in other countries, but there has been a similar kind of decline. We should be cautiously pleased with ourselves as a species, but we aren't.

I remember a poem I read when I was a kid, but I can only remember one phrase: "we pick at a wound and it opens to our horror and delight."

When he walks into a dark room and does all that...!

Although that was one of the things I liked about the movie. What did they call it? Gun-kata? I forget.

It did occur to me that it would be very hard to excell in such a martial art in a society that was drugged into emotional oblivion. Excellence requires a strong sense of competition, which is emotional.

I did enjoy the movie, though. I had it saved in my TIVO for a while.
