Not a bad age and he's still working. And has a boat named after him too.
Interestingly not only was he responsible for the first colour television broadcasts in Europe, he also commissioned programmes as diverse as
Civilisation, The Ascent of Man and Monty Python's Flying Circus

More.

David Attenborough is god. If we ever became a republic, he would win the president's job hands down.

One day RocketBoy1.0 announced with perfect toddler logic that he wanted to be David Attenborough. Not have a job like his but to be the actual him. I hated explaining to him that's not how it works.

I really wanted that boat to be called "Boaty McBoatface" as per the results of the public vote. Using Attenborough's name instead is the only thing the decision makers could have done to make me equally as happy.

Thanks Jrrar

I was on the old jref forum too but most of the conversations were lengthier than I had time to get involved with. Will probably end up mostly lurking but will chime in occasionally. Being in the UK you can find that a thread whizzes by when you're not looking too!

Welcome and I'm totally in agreement! And a coworker from London (in the states now)
thinks SHE should be Lady Attenborough!

I'm not one for using titles much, but for me he is always Sir David.

Never understood why it was his brother that got the big titled, not saying the lesser Attenborough wasn't a good actor and director but his achievements pall into almost insignificance compared to the greater Attenborough.

I agree. I wonder what would have happen if certain people had died at birth. The younger Attenborough would have easily have been replaced by someone else. But no one could have had the achievements David had. He was the force behind "Life on Earth" and several other great educational shows. Without him they would never had been made. I am sure they inspired many people to do different things.

His tenure at the head of BBC2 was pretty important for general non-nature programmes as well. I don't know if that was what you were referring to or, just the nature ones.

As an aside:

It's recently been realised that Zoo Quest was filmed in colour

here it is on Iplayer:

A rational explanation can be found in the British Consitution. (Wow, "rational" and "British Constitution" in the same sentence. I never expected to do that.) Richard Attenborough was made a life-peer so he could sit in the House of Lords and look after the interests of the British film industry. That's the way these things have to be done in the UK. Quaint, isn't it?
