Not sure this is the right sub forum for this, but wasn’t sure where to post. I had heard a little over a year or so ago that he had finally been placed on the lawn of the Rhea County Courthouse just across the way from WJ Bryan.

Had never been to the site, which is a little sad as a lifelong skeptic and Tennessean. But I had a little work to do in the area yesterday and figured I’d swing by to get a look. Was a little too late to run through the museum it turned out. But anyway I found a parking spot nearby, hopped out of the car and there he was.

Here’s a little more info on the topic.

Didn’t notice any vandalism whatsoever. Only quibble is that apparently, due to the presence of a large light at his feet, Bryan is illuminated at night while Darrow remains in the dark.

Quote my post to see how I did that

the "500" is 500 pixels wide

My mom's side of the family is from Dayton, so I've grown up with the story of the Trial. I've had a Coke at the table in Robinson's drugstore where the planning happened, and nearly bitten through my tongue, even as a kid, because my mother's family was decidedly on the anti-evolution side (and most still are).

Of the two cases defended by Darrow that I have read extensively studied , I find the Leopold/Loeb case far more interesting and compelling than Scopes.

The latter was almost orchestrated and set up to be a publicity stunt and a circus, and so it turned out to be. Scopes volunteered to be prosecuted, Dayton did it for the publicity and the business it would bring, they deliberately selected powerful well known representation for both sides guaranteeing national press coverage (it was covered by H. L. Mencken). Scopes was not even sure that he had ever taught a class on evolution, was not put in jail, and even dined with the prosecutors during the trial.

Leopold/Loeb was totally different kettle of Jellyfish. Here Darrow managed to save the lives of two teenagers who would certainly been hanged without his defense skills. They murdered an innocent 14 year old boy, picked pretty much at random because they thought it was the ultimate act of anÜbermensch (Superman) and proved that they were superior human beings. And they remained totally indifferent to the effect of what they did, even after they got caught.

In the OP's photo, Darrow looks like he's totally pitching a tent! That's cool!!
