"Evolution Schmevolution: A Daily Show Special Report"

I would think that John Stewart is one of the good guys. But with a title like that, who knows!

I'm betting a parody of Cretin Science.

"Well, Jon, we bleeve in equal time for all scientific theories about the origin of life. Who's to say the K'tung people's theory is wrong? There's no evidence against it."

"I'm sorry, I've never heard about that theory."

"They bleeve that the great god Gwanna defecated all lifeforms on this planet around one hundred years ago."

A bit off-topic but my first thought when I saw the thread title was - "They are a bit late to be running that story".

Seriously it does show the creationists have, at least in the USA managed to create an appearance that there is something to talk about regarding evolution as a substantiated theory.

From the press release on Evolution, Schmevolution:

"Evolution Schmevolution" will
explore:
  • What other theories are out there?
  • Who's on the frontlines of this debate?
  • Should your child's curriculum really be decided by experts in their respective fields? [emphasis mine]

I think that last question is a pretty good sign of which side of the debate the Daily Show favors.

Bloody brilliant...

I love the line "Mankind created these creation myths to comfort itself... by laughing at the creation myths of other cultures."

Way to go Jon & Team

I enjoyed it when he described how the Adam and Eve legend became the predominant view of man's origins. "God created man out of a lump of clay and woman out of the man's rib. it became the preeminent theory of the origin of man. It just made sense."

Oh come on, was there really any doubt? These are the same people who have This Week In God, where cracks are made about the stupid beliefs of religions.

I thought the entire piece was very well done. After the intitial setup, a piece on Dayton, Tennessee was shown (Evolution trial, William Jennings Bryant). I still find it hilarious that the Daily Show finds and interviews people that do not know that the interview is a comedy piece. However, the Christian woman they interviewed was laughing at other people going to hell and was damn scary in doing so. If Christianity teaches to love ones neighbor, why would she take such pleasure at (even if its only her beliefs) their "to-be suffering"? I never understand Christians like that. Strange little town (quote from show "If this town really existed, then that would be f#@$ing scary". The joke was that the town is a representation of the town in the 1920s, complete with costumed tourguides.).

I actually became quite interested in the interview with the author of "The Republicans attack on Science". The author was a very good interview, and the book looks like a good read.

Yep Dayton really does exist. It’s close to Pikeville TN and is a very very small town, but it is incorporated I believe.

Info on Dayton

Uhhh...yeah...that was the joke.

Check the link. It' (in)famous for only two things, the Scopes Monkey trial and strawberries.

The JOKE was that Dayton is like Colonial Williamsburg, complete with period actors and period dress. The town is run down and old fashioned. The statement of "If this town really existed..." was sarcastic meaning the town is nuts. I know Dayton really exists.

Maybe I was unclear when I said that...my bad.

The first episode gave me quite a few belly laughs. One of the biggest was caused by the graphic showing the progression of the human being: from a knuckle-walker to a stooped man-ape to a partially erect being to a fully upright walking man ... to a man with an enormous beer belly seated on a couch holding a remote control.

You mean...I am the pinnacle of human evolution?!?!? who woulda thunk it? :D ;) ;)

Another statement I liked was something along the lines of this:

Man couldn't accept that humans were created special. Hence, creation myths. But then, Charles Darwin blasted these theories with his work done the hutches. Was man really special? Or was he just a bit luckier than that stuff that swims around on our shower walls?

Yeah, that was good stuff. Man I stay up passed midnight just for this show (stupid CTV).
