curses/terminal spreadsheet and news client software?

I currently have the entire OOo suite installed for the sole reason that i need to make a spreadsheet and send it each day. I really see no reason why i couldn't do this in a simple terminal/curses program.

I've looked a bit, but i can't find any that support xls, nor any that had (good/any) support to convert it quickly.

I don't need any fancy graphics or anything, just need to get to the cell, and write a number or a bit of text... that is all.

And i really would prefer to not have to fire up X to do that stuff.. i just fail to see the need.

Any good ones?

Also, what is a good news client for terminal/curses.. i guess i could use pine, but is there anything better?

Wanna replace knode with terminal as well, again, i fail to see the need for X for this.

Sincerely
Tobias

Something that runs in a shell(konsole, xterm).

Sorry, maybe i should have made it clear that i was talking about linux. :/

The results should be openable in excel, though shouldn't they?

I'm just shooting in the dark here... I don't know enough to figure out your issue for real :)
You want me to count on excel being able to open a non xls document.. You've got to be kidding me.

Maybe if it was something i send to another nerd. But i can't really count on that for this. :/

Agreed with AUP... if the extension is correct, the conversion is nearly transparent to the user.

Ok, thanks for all the help, csv may work(it needs to be transparant, lets see :)).

As for lynx holding nntp client.. maybe, i'll check it out, thanks :D

I have CSV sheets written on a Psion 5 which work in Excel.
Excel can read comma separated lists, no?
