He hinted at it in an interview last month, and Thursday Charlie Crist took the plunge, asking his girlfriend, Carol Rome, to be his wife.

A bachelor for decades, Crist, 51, has been dating Rome for the past nine months.

"She's special in every way," Crist said of his new fiancee in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times's Adam Smith, who broke the story. "She's brilliant, beautiful and sweet. I'm very, very lucky."

Crist did the honors in his hometown of St. Petersburg. No wedding date between he and Rome, 38, has yet been set.

Crist, whose eleventh-hour endorsement of John McCain before the Florida primary proved crucial, has been talked about as vice presidential timber. But his bachelorhood has been widely seen as an impediment, especially in a party that derives many of its votes from cultural conservatives.

It's a shame that marital status is seen as a possible deal-breaker for a VP candidate. Is this politically motivated? It seems odd that a man would finally decide at age 51 that he wants to be married. Not impossible, but the timing and circumstances suggest an alternative motive.

Actually the gay rumor came from some on the right when he was running for govenor.
It goes back to the Terri Shivo controversy in that he didn't agree with Jeb Bush's stance. I think Terry Randell was behind it.

Farther than that actually; all the way back to his race for Attorney General. I'm not sure what the rumor was based on except that he was middle-aged, single, and reasonably attractive. I've never supported the guy (there was a amendment to our constitution he backed fervently, which since has passed and been a boondoggle) so I'm happy (if?) this puts him out of contention.

Reminds me of New Zealand PM Helen Clark. She was pressured by the NZ Labour Party to get married despite being opposed to the concept of marriage.

It seems to have worked out well for her though, she's still with her husband and is now the longest serving Labour Party leader.

Unlikely. Holmes did not not die until 1998. Since death is usually considered a prerequisite for reincarnation, this would not be possible as Crist is more than 20 years old.

Don't worry. I'm sure there must still be a few good homophobic racist white male candidates who know how to keep women in their place for the Republicans to choose from. Maybe they'll bring back Pat Robertson.
