A quick note. This set sells for some crazy price on Amazon and I had been really curious about the e-bay deals from China. Anyhoo, being a curious kinda guy I bought a copy, expecting the worst.Near as I can tell this is for far east distribution. Perfect packageing, lots of funny chinese squiggles on the disks and boxes but a very good transfer (given the age of the video). Original in english, no subtitles. As good, I suspect as the overpriced Amazon thing. Cost to me, delivered 16 pounds (like $$24?). Took 4 days to get it.Seems like a buy and apparently a legit copy.Thought you would like to know.(damn Chinese can do everything cheaper)

Funny, I bought the DVD set for my parents a few years ago and it was 1/2 the Amazon price.

Hmm, need to borrow it and get my fix in.

I've been watching it on the Science Channel. The way he imparts the wonder and beauty of the universe is truly amazing. I can't help but feel exhilarated and more connected to the universe having watched his show... not to mention lucky to be alive. The first episode with the Cosmic calendar was on last week.

I think I got it from Deep Discount DVD, but I paid something like that for it, $80-90. It's regionless.

I remember watching Cosmos when it originally aired. I'm so fond of it. It's been fun watching it again. Especially the episode about the Dutch explorers, because they filmed at Christian Huygen's house outside of the Hague (Hofwijk) and I used to pass that on the train all the time (when headed out of the Hague towards Gouda/Utrecht).

Yeah, I used to watch it on PBS with my Dad when I was a kid.
Actually, he has it on dvd....I wonder if I can get him to burn it for me?

Good afternoon.
I also have this on DVD. I can't remember what I paid but it was up there. And might I say worth every penny of it. Carl Sagan had that ability to spark an interest in science in anyone.
What I have been looking for for the longest time a either an audio or if possible a video of him making his famous Pale Blue Dot speech. I can't seem to find that anywhere.

The complete Cosmos dvd set was, and still is, the best gift I had ever received (my parents got it for me for my 32nd b-day). I think they said it cost them close to $100 (U.S.).

Carl Sagan passing was the only time in my life I cried upon hearing of a "celebrity's" death.

"funny chinese squiggles"

Ah, you mean the language that the majority of the world writes in. Ok then.

You have an interesting definition of "the majority," then. Granted, one point three billion or so Chinese are a substantial fraction of the world's population -- but hardly a "majority."

The most commonly written language in the world is, of course, English.

My father has two complete DVD sets of Cosmos, one as a backup. I think he spent too many years trying to video tape all the episodes, constantly replacing tapes that went bad, or got chewed, etc., so now he's making sure he doesn't have to worry about being without an episode ever again (unless the house gets hit by a meteor or something).

I think every hotel room should have a Cosmos DVD set w/player. :)

Yeah there's no disputing English as the universal language of commerce and therefore the most popular written language. China isn't too far behind though. Take a look at some internet and language stats and trends. How soon before our children will be pushed to learn Chinese to compete in the world? http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats7.htm

Ed, might you be able to do me a favor? It's a long shot, perhaps, but I'm trying to find a copy of Cosmos that uses an elusive piece of music in one of the episodes -- "Blues for a Red Planet" to be specific. Can you identify the music used in the background as the simulated Martian lander is touching down on the red planet? Some copies have Stravinsky's "Firebird" while others have used Jupiter from Holst's "The Planets" -- but I've aso seen a version that uses a piece of music by (I believe) Bill Conti. Can you let me know if perhaps this is a copy that uses that odd selection? Also, do you know which version (date) your Cosmos series is?

Thank you.

Does anyone know where you can buy single disks?

I loned disc 2 to a friend because he was all horoscopes. I have not seen it since and he has moved. THAT WAS THE BEST DISC TOO! It also had the episode on evolution on it!

Any Ideas!!!???

Help?!?!?

FYI i was very inspired by "The demon haunted world" and you can hear the results here:

That was really good! Both God of the Gaps and Evolution Rocks had an engaging sound. It was a tad difficult to hear the lyrics in God of the Gaps. The Evolution Rocks lyrics kicked ass and blended well with the light pop sound and was so much "fun" to listen to. The melody reminded me a bit of 10,000 Maniacs. Keep it up!

You clearly understood my point that a lot of people write in Chinese, or use some form of Chinese characters (ie. Japanese), and an additional point; calligraphy is highly prized in Asia, so probably calling it 'funny squiggles' is somewhat ignorant and insulting, IMO.

Who is the ignorant and insulting one here? You were the one making a false claim, and then tried to change your claim to salvage your butt. After which you try to play the I'm Offended! card.
